In 1910, 83% of African Americans lived in the South, about the same percentage that had lived there since at least as far back as 1790.

By 1970, the percentage of African Americans living in the South had fallen to just 40%.

The Great Migration had a profound impact on nearly every aspect of American like, and has been called "the biggest under-reported event of the 20th century."

This map shows how it happened. It displays the population changes of each state between 1910 to 1970.
