The real Great Britain

Our understanding of Britain has been shaped by our views of royals and big houses with drama upstairs and downstairs. And it's all more or less wrong. Mark Phillips looks at how Britain is becoming more and more like America - a multicultural melting pot. He also asks, can you make a living as a Duke nowadays?

The second part of this nearly made me puke, the UK is not like america, america is a modern immigrant state and Britain in an ancient European kingdom and should always stay that way.

The United kingdom will never be East America, not a chance and they are happy the way they are for centuries. London is not the whole UK so stop being lazy and travel around the nation.

London is not the uk ! It has surrendered itself to foreigners! I was born there but I don't recognise it now !

Why don’t you leave the BBC to talk about the Uk. London is not the only place in the uk. Maybe you should go somewhere other than one place.

This is not a representation of the Uk.

4:90 'We haven't been so good at representing our ethnic diversity'

Britain is a diverse country but the fact is we are still majority white

And a statement like that needs some sort of basis or quantification. What is the proportion of BME representation in the arts in accordance with the demographics of different groups?

I fully support BME people having opportunities, but not box-ticking to suit identity politics lobbies

You could never have an ethnic quota on something like Downton Abbey because it simply wouldn't be realistic

Or let's say, a period drama.... could a black or Asian woman realistically play Queen Elizabeth I ? No, because no matter how good an actress she is, Queen Elizabeth I was a real historic person and was neither black or Asian. That is not racist- it is just the need to be authentic.

We colonised America, the 13 white lines on the American flag represent the 13 British colonies that gained independence. America speaks our language, kinda and a huge amount of Americans have British ancestry. We have clan names that go back centuries that are still in existence today.

Mentioning French Huguenots as an example of significant migration is ridiculous. Only an estimated 40-50, 000 came here across the 16, 17th and 18th Centuries. In one thousand years of history before the Second World War migration to Britain was demographically insignificant. In 1997, net migration was 48, 000, it almost trebled to 140, 000 by 1998. Between 1997 and 2010 - the New Labour Party years, migration averaged 200, 000. Neither Simon Schama or that woman at the end have to, or would choose to, live in a street where 50-60 % of the people were like the comic.

Sorry folks this isn't the real Britain. It's just small parts of what Britain is. As usual it's too london centric (yes london is important i know but so many interfaces with different cultural influences from all over, which includes immigrants, from Anglo saxons, to Danish and Norwegian vikings, hugenots, jews, irish, Chinese and more recent from former colonies and the E.C. More disappointing than the shallow program though are some of the comments.
