TOMORROW NEVER DIES | Carver's death

On this day in 1997, the crew filmed Bond (Pierce Brosnan) killing Carver (Jonathan Pryce) with his own sea drill from TOMORROW NEVER DIES (1997). The scene aboard the stealth ship was shot at Pinewood Studios in a full-size set designed by production designer Allan Cameron. He said: “The challenge with a Bond film is marrying the reality to the fantasy element. The Americans had built a few stealth ships, but nothing on this scale, so I was inventing a completely new ship.”

I have to say that Carver’s quite an underrated villain in the Bond series. His goal to broadcast fake news by provoking war and re-establishing a new world order under his mass media network was ahead of other villains in his time.

Not to mention how today we are similarly witnessing how fake news can cause problems and divisions anywhere, quite like what Carver planned in this movie.

Eliot Carver finally succumbed to the daily grind

I always appreciated Jonathan Pryce calling out his own character's Bond Villain Stupidity in the occasional interview. That is an actor who knows what genre he's in and brings all the ham it deserves to the part.

The first rule of mass media: Give the people what they want.

Words so true especially today.

Love the fact that the rails the drill is on allows it to travel right into the command centre. Its as if the designers planned Elliot's death right from the get go!

How to become a successful movie villain:
Rule Number 1: If you have the chance to shoot the hero, then just do it immediately instead of explaining about your grand plan.

Carver was a villain that did a whole lot of talking and manipulation, yet in person was nothing more than a nerd who couldn't handle face to face combat. He relied on his goons to do the dirty work while he created the headlines to go with them. Very evident in his demise as he didn't even think of jumping out of the way.

Pierce Brosnan was, is, and will always be the best James Bond ever. His 4 Bond films never fail to entertain

This to me will always be one of the most brutal deaths of a Bond villain.

“Give the people what they want” might be the best Bond punchline in the franchise

This was by far the most brutal Bond villain death; Franz Sanchez getting burned alive and then blown up is the 2nd most brutal Bond villain death!

1:31 - I love the sound the drill makes as it approaches. It sounds like an angry animal. Bond villains have often kept animals to do their bidding - sharks, piranhas and so on, this is almost like a technological animal. I'm probably reading way too much into this, but with technology, you don't have to think about its welfare, like Elliot, he just uses it without any care at all to further his own ends. So the angry sounds it makes is almost like a mistreated animal that's finally getting its revenge on an abusive owner.

Me: James, what happened? Where is Carver?
James Bond: Drilling a new headline.

It seems your story Elliot ended on the cutting room floor.

1:31 You can tell by the look on Elliot’s face that he knew he was about to die the moment Bond dropped that pun.

"Give the people what they want."

I think Mr. Carver got the drill, Mr. Bond.

Always satisfying when the smug, arrogant villain starts whimpering like a baby as Bond wipes out all his plans in one move.

1:32 The news is, Elliot, your ass is grass, and we're the lawnmovers!

I love the line James Bond gives before he kills him, it's a great line.

“I may have some breaking news for you. You forgot the first rule of mass media Elliot. Give the people what they want” 1:28 best one liner before the kill. Also a valid point in today’s news.
