Astronomy - Ch. 9.1: Earth's Atmosphere (3 of 61) What Happens to Sunlight when it Reaches earth?

In this video I will explain what happens to sunlight when it reaches Earth. 29% is reflected by the clouds, the surface, and the upper atmosphere (scattering). 59% is absorbed by the atmosphere and radiated to space. And 12% is radiated from the surface of the Earth.

I think we have the same bow tie. Looking sharp!
Fantastic visual aid and explanation, thank you for the help!

Michael i like what you do, it is made simple, thank you but i want to explain something;
The earth radiates more heat ( more than 100% ) to space than we receive from solar energy as we speak;
As we use up fossil energy we also produce heat, fireplaces, heaters, steel furnaces etc.
And as such have been heating up the atmosphere by a small percentage therefore we must radiate more
than we receive in solar energy and the atmosphere seems to have coped very well so far, just thought i would throw that into the mix, i don't consider myself a skeptic, just not convinced by the various arguments put forward by "scientists" like Al Gore and his private jets etc, i look at it and liken it to an insulated wall, the more heat is produced inside the house the more it radiates to the outside, it's a thermal constant, thanks for all your work

Professor also start astrophysics series please

The atmosphere does not reflect and scattering is not a form of reflection, so atmosphere should not be in that 29%, which raises the question if the 29% is correct.

Excellent information. How does the figure 1361 W/sqmt derived?

Question: if the Sun has so much effect on our atmosphere, clouds land & sea, why isn't the solar model included in the climate change or global warming models? The sun has been going through change the last 50+ years & has been giving us a lot more radiance & radiation!

OK. Why didn't sun light burn people (claimed to have) landed moon surface in 1969 since the moon has no atmosphere?

I like this course. But something bothers me.
Balance : amount of heat absorbed = amount of heat radiated. Yes, but trees get energy from sun. The wood grows. Wood, oil, gas, it's all energy once received from the sun that is stored. Isn't it? It is a buffer of energy. Or did I miss something?

I'm not going to pretend to be like you academic people here, however it seems like the earth takes what it needs and gives back what it doesn't and temperatures have fluctuated throughout history and would not mean that the temperature will rise before CO2?
If this is the case has the sun not always had an effect radiation CO2 levels weather drastically or moderately?

Okay this video has a lot of problems. Like NASA, he assumes 100 percent of the climate system happens in the atmosphere via radiative equilibrium, but 50 percent of absorbed incoming energy goes into the oceans and turns into heat. The heat can be stored for thousands of years and comes out via currents and drives the climate system. On the scale of millions of years, his model is more or less correct, but on the scale of decades and centuries, the oceans drive our climate and the temperatures we experience at the surface.

how do I calculate the number of frequencies sunligjt from 200nm to 1100nm?

What about the energy coming form inside the Earth? Does not that play a significant role? Temperature is 10 degrees higher not too deep down and that energy hits the surface ...

Very nice video, got to learn so many information. I have a doubt! What about radio waves, microwaves? Aren't they also emitted by sun, x-rays (which you said is emitted only at certain times)

If CO2 has already all IR-photons absorbed in the first 300 m height so does H2O, right? ... if that is the case, how do clouds absorb any IR-radiation during night time? ... at least compared to clear sky nights ...

I can't believe what this man just said about the sun. Plus how can he speak about the sun without how NASA scientist talk about different types of level of atmosphere? Oh dam. I should of read very carefully before I said what I said. My bad.

If sun waves radiation slow like atmosphere.. it's means level of moon move slowly...

So moon environment support atmosphere of moon.. means radiation first stop atmosphere lair

And:
a. As the Earth's magnetic field weakens, currently projected to be at it's weakest around 2035, just 17 years from now, more and more cosmic radiation will reach the surface of the Earth, and us.
b. As the Sun goes into grand solar minimum, currently projected to be at it's lowest around 2075 - 2080, the loss of some of the solar shield will also allow more cosmic radiation to reach the Earth.

We are looking at tough times ahead it currently appears. Being forewarned allows people to prepare.
