I thought the point was that both were ridiculous. Like the Matriarchy caused pain to the Kens and the Patriarchy caused pain to the Barbies

I hate how people are completely ignoring the line ‘It’s Barbie and it’s Ken’ at the end which all in all concludes that matriarchy and patriarchy are both ridiculous. Did y’all not watch the movie? 😭

My uncle made a good point when my family and I went to see it this past weekend. He said that the movie seemed to be almost satirical because it showed the extreme of both feminism and patriarchy and how both are somewhat toxic. In the end they realized they both needed to make changes and be more inclusive of each others needs. Always remember - you are Kenough! 😂❤

Tbh I do think that the message is that men and women should both "rule". They clearly made the point that the full matriarchy of barbieland is also not how our world should be

the literal point of the movie was that neither patriarchy nor matriarchy is good and men and women should coexist (Ken finding himself without Barbie etc.)

I think by first showing a total matriarchy in the Barbie world and then switching it later to a total patriarchy with the Kens, the message was that a total matriarchy or patriarchy is not ideal. The Barbies realized how the Kens felt when it was a matriarchy, and the Kens realized that the Barbies were unhappy in a total matriarchy. I don't think they were at all implying that a complete matriarchy was better.

Honestly, the message I got from the movie is that everyone should be treated equally. The matriarchy hurt the Kens and the patriarchy hurt the Barbies. To avoid that, we should not have either. I do think that the message could've been handled better, but other than that, yeah.

I kinda felt like the movie wasn't actually about the world being a matriarchy, it was instead about equality

That was NOT the message though. (!spoilers ahead!) At the end Barbie tells Ken that he should be his own person and shouldn’t just exist as her accessory. I don’t know how people missed that.

Amala, there is only one thing you are wrong about. At the end of the movie Barbieland does not go back to a matriarchy, the Barbies and the Kens actually come together to make it an equal place for both Barbies and Kens(and don’t forget Allan😂😂😂)

The women were not presented as dumb, Amala. They were smart women, just not in the way you wanted. It's a Barbie movie, no one is gonna be discussing neuroscience. They banded together for teamwork to save themselves. Barbie was also incredibly brave, leaving her home for the real world and taking a chance. Barbie overcame her insecurities, her fears. The daughter, Sasha was so annoying tho. She clearly doesn't know the meaning of fascism.

And the quote about it being impossible to be a woman. That is very true for 80% of the world where gender roles are still very strict. Women are expected to be so many things that Gloria pointed out. Including if you earn too much money, men don't wanna date you. If you are self-sufficient, you are judged for "wanting to be a man". If you don't work at all, you are lazy or have no ambition. If you do work, you are still expected to be a traditional wife at home. Women are still very much oppressed by the patriarchy outside of America, so it really resonated with me, an African woman.

I watched this movie, and the message is that both genders should "rule." Neither genders were happy in a world where one dominates over the other, and they acknowledge it, or at least Issa Rae does at the end of the movie. I think often enough our own political views get in the way of the actual message. That, or we didn't see the same movie.

I hate when people way "men start wars, " insinuating that if women had power they wouldn't do the same. Oftentimes conflict is inevitable, and a leader has no choice but to fight. The only reason there aren't women starting wars is because women aren't in a position to do so.

I think my only real criticism that I have is that when she says “it’s impossible to be a woman” she means the pressure they’re/we’re under and how you can’t do anything without being criticised but I do think men experience pressure too and will be criticised for other things.

Mm, …. This Men’s Rights Activist LOVED the movie. I’m going to see it at least two or three more times.

The movie laid bald a number of critical facts about men and women, and it also deconstructed its own story of the “Patriarchy.” For instance, it showed a female doctor quite prominently, in “the patriarchy, ” and made clear that just because you are a man, no, you don’t get to be a doctor, unlike in Barbie Land, where you just put on doctor clothes… …and now you are a doctor!

And the “woman is impossible” speech could just as easily be written that being a “man is impossible.”

The ending is more a wrap up than a conclusion, and it mainly leaves us with more questions that answers.

This may well be the most important movie since the Matrix.

This Ken is 100% in favor of the movie.

Parting thought- It’s funny: which has happened in real life: Have the boy toys invaded the girl’s toys, or have the girl’s toys invaded the boy’s toys? Watch the Asoka trailer, watch The Marvels, and get back to me.

Let's be honest barbieland run by women being 100% peaceful is the most fantastical part of the movie. No one hates women like other women

To be fair the character of Ruth does acknowledge in the final scene that “patriarchy” is just a term used to try to make the world make sense. It’s not completely one-sided.

When she said "it impossible to be a woman, " she meant you cannot wear what you want, be who you want, act the way you want, look the way you want, or even talk the way you want without being criticized. You're too sluty, you're too cute, you're too loud, you're too quiet, you were asking for it, you were closed off, ect.

Amala, as a woman on the internet I KNOW you experienced stuff like that on the daily.

I think the whole message is that they DID complement each other. The Matriarchy hurt the Kens, and when the Kens finally got freedom, the Patriarchy hurt the Barbies, which so many commenst have already said.
