This 17th-century coffre fort, or strong box, is an exceptional maritime treasure. Braving shipwrecks, storms and the ravages of time—particularly the decay that often threatens wooden antiquities—this rare large example has survived in remarkable condition. Crafted with kingwood oyster-veneered panels, this impressive box showcases a magnificent fleur-de-lis and foliate-pierced strapwork hinged top.

Incredible. I always wish that we could see the “lives” these antiques lived, who owned them, where they’ve been.

Very cool, I bet they have a lot of interesting stories attached to then.

I can't think of any piece older than this wherein the craftsman intentionally highlighted the character of the wood. Wood's natural grain character seems to be desired only relatively recently.

I wonder what might be the oldest artifact that demonstrates an aesthetic appreciation of wood character?

Needs a bit more of longer description, it was obviously, abruptly cut from.
