I drove on this exact road and listened to this theme. It was a moment I can’t describe.

Such an unsettling score added to a montage of beautifully shot aerial scenes. Sets the creepy, sinister tone of the movie instantly.

I have yet to see a creepier opening sequence or a masterpiece of horror that was ahead of its time.

Nicholson is the greatest actor ever. Kubrick the best director ever. No wonder this movie is one of the best horror ever.

A masterpiece.
There's a difference between getting a fright whilst watching a movie and feeling genuinely frightened whilst watching a movie.

I just came back from driving on this road! At least for the first part of this intro. Check out St. Mary's Lake near Glacier National Park in Montana. This is the place in the beginning! As I was driving, this music was playing in my head. Now I am staying at a hotel...I hope nothing bad happens to me

From the second this movie opens you know you’re in for one hell of a creepy and suspenseful ride.
I first read the book before ever watching the movie back in the day and I can tell you i was scared shitless.

The fact that Kubrick was nominated for Worst Director at The Razzies for this is utterly ridiculous.

The Shining is the scariest movie I've ever seen. So uncomfortable and creepy it's hard to watch. A total masterpiece!

This is the perfect stage setter for this movie, it shows you without any dialogue how isolated and vulnerable they are going to be...

Fun fact. This super creepy music was perfomed by Wendy Carlos (adapted from Dies Irae), . She also did the score for A Clockwork Orange, (you can hear similarities). Then she went on to do the music for Tron. She is a pioneer in electronic music who is unfortunately most often overshadowed by Kraftwerk as the innovators. After all she helped develop the Moog!

Also Philip Stone who played Delbert Grady's character was also Alex's Father in A Clockwork Orange. Philip also was in Barry Lyndon. Phenomenol actor. He was the only actor to appear in three consecutive Stanley Kubrick films

Can't think of a single movie that has you so fully captured under it's spell, from the very second it begins as completely as this one does. Visually all you see is beautiful mountain scenery, it should instantly illicit feelings of awe and wonder. Yet with just that music, my god that music, you are just overwhelmed with a feeling of utter dread, without a shadow of doubt that a journey beyond your worst nightmares is about to unfold, a journey both poisonous and mesmerizing, repellent and intoxicating in perfect harmony. And to establish all that from the split second the movie begins! Does anyone fully appreciate what a masterful display of filmmaking that is? I realize a lot of people get turned off by the fact that it's not an accurate representation of the book (a book that for the record, I have read multiple times and agree is a fantastic piece of horror in it's own right) and they are completely entitled to their opinions, but I personally couldn't care less. When taken entirely on it's own merit, this film is as close to perfect cinema to me as movies can get. Easily one of my favorite horror movies ever and probably one of my favorite movies ever in general. Just one for the ages.

Would have to probably say in my opinion this is the best way to open a movie, at least to get me situated for what is ahead, obviously film is subjective but man what a way to start a movie.

I love how The Shining from the first second makes a statement and tells audience that they are about to see BIG MOVIE, fantastic movie and bery complex movie.

No compromises in terms of quality, everything is BIG from the first moment.

I have VERY Nostalgic memories of this movie (including 1st watching it in a Motel Room while everyone else was passed out when I was 10yrs old and I COULD NOT SLEEP)...Got to see this in the Movie Theater last night...the Film is such a Masterpiece my eyes watered at times...including that PERFECT Atmospheric Creepy Music at 1:16. THAT is the sound of HORROR.
