I would argue that it's better to quantize and apply track delay. The amount of negative delay required is, of course, different for different string libraries.

That depends on the library you use, when you use LA Scoring strings you can quantize it perfectly no problems.

I use the delay in the track inspector sometimes, but I primarily use a Project Logical Editor action to actually move the strings a random -40 to -20 early

As a drummer, who turned composer, I will tell you playing slightly ahead or behind the beat is one of the secrets to good groove. (Depending on the style.) I’ve always programmed parts intentionally like this. But the nagging question is… What do we do if we should ever get that call and we need to print the score? 😮

Awesome. i’ve always thought that about string libraries especially with staccato patterns like you did here. glad to see my thoughts confirmed

Spitfire fixed that issue with thier plugin "Spitfire Symphonic Motions". It's smooth quantization!

Glad I subscribed to this channel. Something so very obvious and also significant, but still never caught my attention. A small new dimension to add to composing!

Thank you so much! This is something I have been struggling with.

Use the delay on the inspector to move everything back say 50ms and you can still use the grid

Yea as a lifelong violinist I can never record electronic music live because I’m always ahead of the best because Iim anticipating the bow attack, haha. I live in step sequencers.

I wonder what strings library you're using it's so fast and responsive
My libraries are slow as f😂
Great video BTW

That's really a great great tip. I always wondered why when I bounced a midi from a library it had this delay in it and I always dragged it to the body almost to the grid, I thought I was doing it wrong, but it sounded good so I kept doing it. 😂

Quantize then just advance the sequence clock on the string track(s)

yeah but when you suck at playing keyboard... You gotta quantize then move them all a smidge early lol.
