Rising energy prices could push UK inflation as high as 18% next year according to Citi. European gas prices rose sharply this week due to supply fears, after Gazprom Russia’s energy firm announced it would shut down the Nord Stream 1 pipeline - the main gas supply line to Europe - to complete three days of unplanned maintenance.

Right now, Britain and the EU are in the middle of a cost-of-living crisis driven by energy inflation. What can be done to prevent this from happening again?

The cost of living crisis appears to be a global problem, although here in the UK it has been made worse by the increase in the prices of many goods. The prices of gas and even electric bills has increased drastically, I believe that the government can bring into play a policy that helps reduces inflation, but for some reason, I don't think they are concerned about how the common person would do in these strangely challenging times.

Great point. Non-renewables in Europe will be better regulated/less polluting than what’s going on in Russia. Ultimately, if the goal is to do as little damage to the environment as possible without killing the poorest people in the process, it would be a good move to get the heck off Russian energy

I don't understand why are people pulling away from nuclear energy? This is just mind-boggling. Feels like people are intentionally trying to ruin the environment as much as they can.

The irony of having climate change concerns, but shutting down the cleanest energy source and increasing natural gas consumption.
Nuclear power should be the goal, not seen as a "lesser evil" during an energy crisis.

If these governments and the people who vote for them truly cared about climate change they would be begging for more nuclear!

And by the way - wind, solar and storage are not cheaper sources, as they require 3x more installed capacity than the actual peak demand to be relevant. And even then they are not suitable for base load.
The cost per twh is stacked heavily in favour of nuclear and hydro.
This is incredibly frustrating to watch.

5:50 in France, floating rates mortgages almost don't exist.We borrow at fixed rate, max 25 years. But now, there is a big problem : we have regulations that forbid to lend money above a certain rate, the "'usury rate". (usury rate = mean rate observed during the past months x 1, 33; and this rate isn't purely the interest rate, it has to include all fees relating to the loan, ie insurance etc.). Problem : the usury rate isn't updated fast enough to keep track with the real market conditions. So... our real estate market is completely jammed, banks being unable to lend at normal, market rates. This issue is becoming a national disaster : 50% of loan applications are now rejected by bank, and real estates transactions are beginning to stall. Should this situation continue 2 or 3 months, house prices would start to significantly drop, which would trigger an economic breakdown (many families could end up in negative equity).
