My Gaming Channel!

The second Green Lantern, Hal Jordan, debuted in the silver age in 1960. His first solo outing saw him fighting a villain called...The Puppetmaster. No not the Fantastic Four's Puppetmaster from Marvel Comics, but another less well known DC comics version. Can the Emerald Gladiator take on a giant puppet...the answer is yes. Can he do it without tripping over himself? Find out here on Casually Comics!

Hal doesn't have many villains because he's his own enemy

The mostly hidden sub text for Hal is that Hal Jordan is a loser at doing anything besides flying planes and being Green Lantern.
That’s why he just hangs out as Green Lantern all the time on earth and will just leave earth to roam space for years at a time. The Guardians know this and just lead him around by the nose to do their dirty work.

I never understood why DC try to make Hal cool. He works better as a loser with a heart of gold.

IMHO

This has to be my favourite comics channel. Everyone else is reviewing current crossovers and adaptations, while Sasha is here all "LET ME TELL YOU HOW GREEN LANTERN FOUGHT A PUPPET" and I could not be more thrilled

Green Lantern was 100% planting people to scream "help" whenever he was left alone with Carol.

"GAH!" What a nuisance! Silver Age Green Lantern's opponents had yellow outfits, yellow weapons and/or yellow special effects SO OFTEN..! If I were the GL, I'd go into every battle with an industrial paint sprayer! "HAH! Your yellow costume and weapons are now RED!"

I also like how the tale of Biffy seems to imply that all of the common criminals in DC are the same ones, and the cops just let them out every now and then and then capture them again the same way the heroes do with supervillains.

5:12 "Puppet Master might not be trademarked but that move is! You'll be hearing from my lawyers Hal Jordan!" Respectfully, Clark Kent

Of course, the question we must ask in every such issue is, why would Hal Jordan do this?

Hal: *steps on gf's feet*
Carol: oh, you're such a good dancer

We can never really be certain that GL stepping on feet and falling over backwards was because of the Puppet Master or just Hal being Hal.

I guess Green Lantern seemed more obtainable after she failed to get that handful of Quicksilver. The little Pietro escaped her grabby hands.

The best thing about these early Hal Jordan stories is that the profession of "ace test pilot" gets basically no respect a lot of the time with people including it as a reason when they're dismissive of Hal.

Well, obviously the puppet master got his surveillance equipment from Kandor.

Green Lantern's earth based villains are so... odd, because he's been so established as a space fairing and League member fighter, that when you remember enemies like, The Tattoo Man, Harpoon, and Puppetmaster, they seem like they can fight anyone... and they kinda do.

I was waiting for the Clumsy Hal moment... glad this issue didn't disappoint 😏

As much as I like Hal Jordan and the modern Green Lantern corps and mythology, Alan Scott is a great character and utter badass

Depending on the universe, it might be Scarlet Witch grabbing a handful of Quicksilver...

In terms of Hal's unsung rogues, I've always loved Evil Star and thought he deserved a big story - he's immensely powerful and his little Starlings are so creepy and make him unique amongst all villains. Also, Invisible Destroyer!! (I love me a good fin helmet)

I kind of see this villain as a metaphor for what Hal is going through, the puppet is a metaphor for commitment. The way the puppet master pulls the strings, Carol tries to pull the strings of Green Lanterns heart. But eventually Hal controls the puppet master as he takes him to jail, which is juxtaposed to Hal wanting to be the one to get a commitment out of Carol instead of Carol getting commitment out of him… honestly it’s a little blurry but I feel like strings and commitment have some kind of a juxtaposition relevancy

I think puppet Master is the rare villain who wore yellow not because he studied Green lantern but because he liked the color... Check out his next appearance in a very early issue of teen Titans, where he's not only rocking yellow but some seriously committed shoulder pads....

Now if you really want to check out a rogue who committed to the yellow schtick, you need to check out Goldface, who's entire gimmick was he was gold and he liked gold.... That dude was a major thorn in both Hal's and Guy's butt... I would also strongly suggest you check out the lunacy that was The Predator, a GL villain who should appeal to all of your Lois Lane like fantasies....
