►In this episode give some fighting tips using the heavy bag to look at 3 simple tricks that dramatically increase the power in your punch.

This isn’t a ‘How to Hit a Heavy Bag’ video, but some simple ideas of how to punch harder by developing enough power to knock someone out in a street fight.

TELL US WHAT YOU THINK: Should you wear boxing gloves and wrap your hands when training on the heavy bag? LEAVE YOUR OPINION IN OUR COMMENTS BELOW.

If you want to learn how to fight or how to defend yourself in a fight then you must learn how to punch hard or at least increase your punching power without wearing boxing gloves. After all, you’re not going to be walking down a street at night wearing boxing gloves. Traditional Martial Arts training requires that you condition your fists to fight. So why wear gloves?

Conditioned knuckles are important to any martial arts fighter. Here are our 3 basic tips on how to condition your knuckles and fists. You will need a boxing heavy bag to practice these techniques.

(1) USE BARE FISTS. The first conditioning technique requires you to focus on forming a good Wing Chun fist by slowly squeezing all the air from your hand. Basically, train on your heavy bag with your bare fists. This is an important first step as it develops a quick reflexes to close your hands in self defence, this is very important for Wing Chun. You must start with this technique.

(2) HIT THE CENTRE OF THE HEAVY BAG. Once you have developed the ability to close your fist quickly forming a correct Wing Chun technique, then you must develop some weight and intention behind this technique. The punch in Wing Chun requires some weight (heaviness) when hitting a person in self defence so this is an important technique to practice.

(3) HIT DON’T PUSH THE BAG. The final stage of conditioning your hands for Wing Chun training should involve practising the Wing Chun chain punch making sure that you form a proper fist and technique when striking the Heavy Bag with multiple Wing Chun punches. Make sure

As a former boxer and long time trainer, I would like to say, this cat actually understands punching pretty damn well. He understands it better than some BOXING coaches I've known actually. Our technique is different, but he's accurate in his assessment of what makes a punch hard. Good job video maker.

just my personal opinion as an ex boxer..I used to wear the heaviest gloves I could for hitting the heavy bag to protect my hands cos after a while it really takes its toll on all the tendons and ligaments in your hands and fingers plus if your used to hitting with huge heavy gloves on your hand speed will increase without them on of course be mindful that you won't be wearing gloves in the street.

I love how you mentioned not to push the bag with your punches. I can't tell you how many times I've had to tell people this at the gym. They think they're punching with power, but all they're doing is pushing. 😩

I was trained in Angelo Dundee's gym in the 90s. So
I have some essential points for elite punching, to add to your good video.
1. Rotate the fist, as this helps deliver the power, while protecting the elbow from injury.
2. Punch with explosive body rotation.
3. Explosively exhale 'from the stomach'
4. Punch through the target with immediate follow-up punch.
5. Your knees should always be bent, because you need to extend the legs to create an explosive forwards motion: this brings your entire bodyweight behind the Punch.
6. The punch lands BEFORE your forwards foot lands from the step forwards.
7. Bring your chin down simultaneously with the punch, ideally with your eyes in line with the arm.
8. Make a fast change of angle either during the first punch (so slightly sideways) or carry the momentum from that first punch into the sideways move, which then carries on into the next punch. This change of angle could come after the 2nd punch, but needs to be a fast 'shift' to the side.

All of that needs to be trained and ingrained.. it's a lot to coordinate and must become automatic.

You're right that in the street, you're not wearing anything on your hands, except when it's cold.. BUT.. you need to stay injury free..especially with the hands.

Train this technique with hand wraps and bag gloves.. then once you have the technique correct.. that is to day, you can do it at speed and with full power.. BEGIN SLOWLY!.. SPEED IS THE LAST THING YOU ADD..

Injuries are common with poor technique..

Then train without the glovrs but, with the hands wrapoed. The bag doesn't 'give' the way a human target will, and you will damage your hands otherwise.

Additionally, you can incorporate striking with the ball of the palm.. this greatly reduces the risk of breaking your hands on the skull and increase the chance of actually landing the punch.

I'm a boxer myself, I hit the heavy bag bare knuckled but only before I leave the gym and only straight punches, for short time. I would never do a full bag workout with no wraps and gloves. Also I like your style, you have mixed some nice close WC elbows and punches with boxing hip movement.

I find that punching a leather bag or synthetic leather bag is fine without gloves and wraps..A canvas bag however will rip your hands open..

Thanks for your videos, I've watched a few now and I'm impressed with the quality of understanding and presentation. On the issue of hand conditioning I'd like to say this: the aim is to condition the muscles and tendons while encouraging the bones of the hand to add calcium and become denser. Therefore what you say is essentially correct - padded bag gloves, boxing gloves or tight hand wraps will hinder this process.

However, it's not necessary to condition the skin. Punching a heavy bag, or other dense material, for a long time on a regular basis can cause cuts and abrasions which will damage the epidermis and can have long lasting consequences for some people, as everyone's skin is different, and repeated damage can be a real issue. In a real fight the skin of one's hands will become damaged but, hopefully, most people will be in this position very rarely, if ever, and occasional skin damage will heal without issue. During a fight no-one notices skinned knuckles it's broken knuckles and sprains that we want to avoid.

I use and recommend the use of thin, soft leather gloves (thin leather gardening gloves are ideal) when training on heavy bags, wall bags and other dense training aids. They protect the skin without significantly reducing the conditioning effect of percussive training.

On the issue of using heavy gloves with bag training to increase hand-speed/punching-power, mentioned in one comment; a better solution is to use wrist weights but I'd caution anyone who wants to try this to train for a good while before using any weight at all and then start with a small amount of weight, building up slowly to a maximum of 12 to 16 ounces per wrist.

Wouldnt mind seeing a whole video of your heavy bag routine. That combo at 1:23 looks excellent. Would like to know your thought process when your hitting the heavy bag. I get confused after throwing preprogrammed combos and stop in frustration but you seem to really be flowing. I would like to be able to flow on the bag or mitts or sparring.

thanks for this and all the other helping videos. Adding to the topic I might share that most of us fighters will punch w/o gloves and wraps (against instruction) even because of liking to feel the surfaces and striking routinely...but I was always told to harden and desensitize the punch by using it on multiple materials (ie, wood steel, brick, stone, water)

There is a lot of confusion. One must decide whether he wants to be a boxer, a martial artist, or a streetfighter,  cause there are markedly different ways to train for each. Suffice it to say that a boxing bout would last several minutes, a streetfight is usually over in seconds, and a karate match lasts somewhere inbetween. Lastly for hand conditioning Okinawan Karate has long advocated Makiwara practice with stunning results

Your so right, conditioned hard hands even on a small fella deliver a lot of power. I have trained like this for years, now I can hit trees, stone (not full power) up too (not beyond) pain, and the massive difference to other people is really obvious.
