What made the Myanmar earthquake so powerful?

At least 144 people have been killed and 730 others injured in Myanmar following a powerful earthquake, according to the head of the country's military government.

The 7.7 magnitude quake struck around midday local time at a shallow depth of six miles, with the epicentre about 10 miles from the second city of Mandalay.

The tremors were felt across neighboring countries, including Thailand.The earthquake resulted in significant casualties and infrastructure damage. As of April 8, 2025, official reports confirm a death toll of approximately 3, 600, with over 5, 000 injured and 160 missing. The quake disrupted essential services such as power, communication, water, and sanitation, leaving many homeless amid extreme heat and seasonal rains. ​I'm so sad .And pray for Myanmar and Thailand😢😢😢

I was on the ground floor of 9-story building condo in Mandalay. It was so serve that the entire building was shaking and walls were starting to crack. I really thought i was going to die and couldn't feel anything expect fear. I was very lucky to be alive.
