Namibia is... GERMAN?!

Yesterday, I arrived in Namibia (my 143rd country!) to start a 10 day tour with G Adventures! But as I've been wandering around the unique capital city of Windhoek, I couldn't help but notice how GERMAN everything feels. Seriously, the culture is bizarre here in Namibia!

As I investigated further, I discovered that Namibia was a German colony (from 1884 - 1915), and despite 103 years of separation since the Germans left, their influence is still deeply rooted in Namibian society today.

I became so fascinated by this German-Namibian culture, because the vast majority of the world that I've seen has been conquered by either the British, French, Spanish, Portuguese or Dutch... Not the Germans.

Here is a fun video I put together today all about my observations on German-influenced Namibia.

Just out of curiosity -- Is this all news to you? Or did you know that Namibia is German-influenced?

I am a Namibian and what you are saying is 100% true. Most of us Namibians are fond of the German culture. I had German as a language in school and was born in Swakopmund which is filled with alot of germans

I was in Namibia last year! It has a lot of German influence, people leave their doors/ gates open and less crime. One of the safest African countries. I suggest tourists to fly from Cape Town to Walvis Bay and enjoy the sand dunes because Windhoek doesnt really have anything special except good beer. Tourists should also go to Sossulvei for the picturesque sand dunes but the easiest sand dunes is Walvis Bay to Swakopmund :)

To the people talking about her saying "German as a first language and German as a second language", she was probably trying to say that some kids have German as their first language, and others as their second language.

This is really interesting. I am black American and speak German. I have been daydreaming about traveling but never considered Namibia. It's definitely on my list now!

Lived in Namibia for a few years from 1986 to 1992 and served in the South African Defence Force at 2 South African infantry Battalion in Walvis Bay and in Angola during the war in 1975. Of course it was known as South West Africa and it was part of South Africa in those days. They gained independence in 1990. It's a beautiful country and the perfect holiday destination.

It looks amazing, especially the beer garden. I never knew Germany had retained an african colony, at least from a cultural perspective. Good job Drew, you have thought me something new. One new fact a day makes for very wise old man lol.
