Du’a of Istikharah

اللَّهُمَّ إِنِّي أَسْتَخِيرُكَ بِعِلْمِكَ وَأَسْتَقْدِرُكَ بِقُدْرَتِكَ، وَأَسْأَلُكَ مِنْ فَضْلِكَ الْعَظِيمِ، فَإِنَّكَ تَقْدِرُ وَلاَ أَقْدِرُ وَتَعْلَمُ وَلاَ أَعْلَمُ وَأَنْتَ عَلاَّمُ الْغُيُوبِ اللَّهُمَّ إِنْ كُنْتَ تَعْلَمُ أَنَّ هَذَا الأَمْرَ خَيْرٌ لِي فِي دِينِي وَمَعَاشِي وَعَاقِبَةِ أَمْرِي فَاقْدُرْهُ لِي وَيَسِّرْهُ لِي ثُمَّ بَارِكْ لِي فِيهِ وَإِنْ كُنْتَ تَعْلَمُ أَنَّ هَذَا الأَمْرَ شَرٌّ لِي فِي دِينِي وَمَعَاشِي وَعَاقِبَةِ أَمْرِي فَاصْرِفْهُ عَنِّي وَاصْرِفْنِي عَنْهُ، وَاقْدُرْ لِي الْخَيْرَ حَيْثُ كَانَ ثُمَّ أَرْضِنِي بِهِ


O Allah, I seek Your guidance (in making a choice) by virtue of Your knowledge, and I seek ability by virtue of Your power, and I ask You of Your great bounty. You have power, and I do not. You know, and I know not, and You are the Knower of the unseen. O Allah, if You know that this matter [mention the thing to be decided] is good for me in my religion, my livelihood, my worldly affairs, and in the Hereafter then decree it for me, make it easy for me, and bless it for me. And if You know that this matter is bad for me in my religion, my livelihood, my worldly affairs, and in the Hereafter then turn it away from me and turn me away from it, and decree for me the good wherever it may be and make me content with it. My first istikharah was when I just graduated from my high school and failed in examination to start my study in one of top universities in my country. The answer from three times of my istikharah is I choose to delay my study in university for one year and study in a course that is located in a masjid area. The answer didn't come to my dream. It's just I feel confident to delay my study in university. I feel comfortable with my decision.

In the course I started to wear hijab. In the next year I passed the examination and start my study in one of the top 3 universities in my country. And in the university I met my husband. Good and wise man who have good knowledge on Islam.

Istikhara Dua:
اللَّهُمَّ إِنِّي أَسْتَخِيرُكَ بِعِلْمَكَ وَأَسْتَقْدِرُكَ بِقُدْرَتِك وَأَسْأَلُكَ مِنْ فَضْلِكَ الْعَظِيم

فَإِنَّك تَقْدِر وَلَا أَقْدِر وَتَعْلَم وَلَا أَعْلَم وَأَنْت عَلَّام الْغُيُوب

اللَّهُمَّ إِنْ كُنْت تَعْلَم أَن هَذَا الْأَمْر-- خَيْر لِي فِي دِينِي وَمَعَاشِي وَعَاقِبَةِ أَمْري

فَاقْدُرْهُ لِي وَيَسِّرْهُ لِي ثُمَّ بَارِكْ لِي فِيه

وَإِنْ كُنْتَ تَعْلَم أَنَّ هَذَا الْأَمْر-- شَرٌّ لِي فِي دِينِي وَمَعَاشِي وَعَاقِبَةِ أَمْرِي

فَاصْرِفْهُ عَنِّي وَاصْرِفْنِي عَنْهُ وَاقْدُرْ لِيَ الْخَيْرَ حَيْث كَانَ ثُمَّ أَرْضِنِي بِه

The two "--" means the places where the person mentions his affair

Transliteration:
Allaahumma ‘innee ‘astakheeruka bi ‘ilmika, wa ‘astaqdiruka bi qudratika, wa as’aluka min fadhlikal-‘Adheemi, fa ‘innaka taqdiru wa laa ‘aqdiru, wa ta’lamu, wa laa ‘a’lamu, wa ‘Anta ‘Allaamul Ghuyoobi, Allaahumma in kunta ta’lamu ‘anna haadhal-amra – [then mention the thing to be decided] khayrun lee fee deenee wa ma’aashee wa ‘aaqibati ‘amree – [or say] ‘Aajilihi wa ‘aajilihi – Faqdurhu lee wa yassirhu lee thumma baarik lee feehi, wa ‘in kunta ta’lamu ‘anna hathal ‘amra, sharrun lee fee deenee wa ma’aashi wa ‘aaqibati ‘amree – [or say] ‘Aajilihi wa ‘aajilihi – Fasrifhu ‘annee wasrifnee ‘anhu waqdur liyal-khayra haythu kaana thumma ‘ardhinee bihi

Translation:
O Allaah I request of You with Your knowledge, and by Your Power I seek capability, and I ask of you of your great favour, since indeed You are the One who is able while I am not, and You know and I do not, and You are the One who knows the unseen. O Allaah if You know that this matter – here he mentions his need – is good for me in this world and for my living and for the matters of my Hereafter – or he said, for my affairs now and the future – then decree it for me and make it easy for me and bless it for me. And if You know that this matter is evil for me in this world and for my life and for the matters of my Hereafter – or he said, for my affairs now and the affairs of my future – then turn it away from me and turn me away from it, and decree goodness for me where ever it may be and make me pleased with it.

Truly an over-due and well needed explanation for us Muslims. My mother has taught me the importance of doing istikhara daily. I have noticed that culturally there are many misunderstandings regarding Istikhara, people think someone else has to do it for them and they see colours etc. A reminder for us to always refer back to the sunnah for the full explanation.
