Tamil old literature gave a much simple method. 7/8 0f length plus 1/2 of height is karnam i.e hypotenuse. Accordingly 8×7/8 +1/2×6 = 7 +3 = 10....

Right angle triangles are beautifully simple things to design and extrapolate other data from. You start from a single point and draw lines of equal length away from the centre point 90 degrees from each other. The length of the hypotenuse is the sum of the squared lengths of the other two sides. That's the easy part. The second part to the beauty of this geometry is that you can extrapolate a perfect 45 degree angle by then marking the halfway point of the hypotenuse. Then you draw a line from your orginal starting point through the dividing line of the hypotenuse and bingo! Perfect 45 degree angle. The beauty of all geometry is in its simplicity and the things you're able to do with it from simple deduction alone. Extra credit for the real masters who can spot the play on words in play here. Hint: you can solve that puzzle by playing the word game Hangman. It's a trick question, don't over think it ;)
