This past summer, California Governor Jerry Brown passed a law that classified cheerleaders as employees and are entitled to benefits that most salary employees get, like sick leave and overtime. The Orange County Register, a newspaper and website in southern California, felt that cheerleaders should not be entitled to these benefits, because they work closely with very wealthy athletes. You read that correctly.

“Being a cheerleader for a pro team obviously has fringe benefits lacking at other jobs, such as working closely with players making an average $1.9 million a year in the NFL and $5 million in the NBA."

Thanks for covering this guys. Watching cheerleaders already feels kind of gross and highly objectifying, but to know they are being horribly underpaid makes it unbearable.

Should Cheerleaders be paid? - YES! Should Cheerleaders be paid for the hours they work, including practise time? - YES!

They should make at least minimum wage for the hours they work (including practise time). They should really earn more than that, I'm not suggesting it has to be the stupid money that the players earn, but more than the bare minimum wage.

Cheerleaders add to the entertainment value of the sporting event (to some in the crowd anyway, others couldn't care less) and they should be rewarded for that, and given the NBA/NFL makes a lot of money they can afford to pay them more than they are getting paid right now. If you want Cheerleaders, pay them, if you don't want to pay them, don't have them.

Paying an entire squad of cheerleaders 100k a year is probably about the same as a bench player's salary.

I have to say, cheerleading IS a sport, and the participants can seriously get hurt. People need to pull their heads out of their asses when it comes to certain things

The benefits part I'm with you completely considering what they rake in, but I don't care for cheerleaders at all. They are the equivalent of strippers to me. I feel they should seek greater employment opportunities if they cannot get them from the owners and leagues.

Never been a fan of cheerleaders but I understand why they're out-there
that's to provide atmosphere and entertainment to the experience, that's not what this
story is about though. Many of them are veeeery talented dancers and
work so hard just to make the squad on courts or fields. They definitely deserve every bit
of coin they earn and even more. Just from my knowledge off of allegations its exploitation when employers cant even
provide the minimum wage which is really unfair when in comparison to media
staff and security. By saying "oh well it's their choice to leave" is
supporting this idea of treating employees like crap. Its no different
to foreign factory workers providing product for these big companies on
horrendous incomes.

They just need to remove cheerleaders, they bring nothing to the game. I don't go to games to watch a bunch of women shake their ass, i go there for the athletes. You know there just going remove cheer leading before it gets to expensive, and good riddance.
