- Update (April 2024)

It’s that time of year again! Apply some more powder to your roof and you’ll be good to go for the whole summer!!!! Check you smoke alarms too :)

Don't forget to reapply your powder soon to help prevent moss growing this Fall/Winter. I just did mine! I never want to scrape moss again!!!

Use a 2” Zinc strip right below the ridge cap and all the way across after cleaning off the moss. 4 years straight with absolutely no more moss growing anywhere. And you don’t have to reapply anything. Worked for me. Shingles are clean and appear new.

Thanks for the pep talk. Getting ready to do a Pnw roof that has never been maintained. Roof is in good shape but moss took over…now I am about to take over the moss.👍

Thanks for taking the time to film, edit and share your moss removal video. Just been given a quote for roof cleaning - spoiler alert, it was ugly! And so it should be, as it is a lot of very hard graft, not to mention dangerous. That said, I'm no stranger to donkey work, and will happily get into the zone with Audible while plodding away at the mundane task of scraping.
Great tip, BTW, regarding the plastic putty knives.
Over here, in the UK, shingles are not so common, and we tend to use slate, or concrete. The roof I'll be cleaning is the latter - I might need a fair amount of those putty knives - and I should be able to use a stiff wire brush in addition to manually scraping the worst of the moss away.
Once done, I intend to chemically treat the roof, and then apply a coating of breathable sealer.

Safety tip for putting a screwdriver in your pocket: tip down, handle up. That way, if you fall, mush less risk of puncturing a hollow organ. Learned that one in the Navy in the 80’s.

Nice presentation. I also live in the PNW and my roof is not quite so mossy except for certain parts. I also have a bid from a roofing company... and they are WAY too costly, so yes, I will be doing it myself and keeping up with the preventative products. (BYW... I also have some up with cost effective safety measures and materials to be imho, even safer than what most roofing companies do.

Great video. I just tried baking soda on my shed and haven’t seen much of a difference. I’m a bit scared to get up there but with tour scraper technique, I think I will get it off. Thank you for this!

I use the wood back of a push broom to remove the big stuff, then flip it over to use the bristles to clean up.
I also purchased "Stay Clean mold, moss, and algae inhibitor" to keep the moss, Etc. from growing back for 3 years, but have not applied it yet. Any experience with that product? It does not kill anything, just keeps things from growing back -- supposedly.

Ty for this instructional video. I read all the comments and carefully viewed your video, but still didn’t hear your thoughts about the “bubbly moss” getting under the shingles and lifting them. My roof is 8/12 pitch, Architectural Shingle being 14 years old. It has Grace Shield under the entire area (NYS requires 3ft from Roof Edge so we used this on this family room addition). I’m asking what to do when some shingles lift.

Why not cut off the end of scraper and expose new sharp face. Can do this repeatedly until handle is reached.

Could you mix the moss B gone powder with water and apply it with a sprayer? Would that not be more efficient and have less blow away?

Without going back over the video, what was the name of the product and where did you buy? Thanks. Very informative!!

I worked at a scientist's house many years ago, he fixed a copper band on the ridge line and said it was to stop moss growing on the roof. I always look at the house when passing and it must work because I never see moss on his roof.

I sprayed it, One container per five gallons dissolved in warn water, used less and good kill overall!

Thanks so much. Great video! I learned a lot. I do have a question. What color is your house? I love it

What about using a shop vac with a scrape head on it. So you would be scraping off the moss but also removing it so when you apply the product it will kill it.

If you use a bleach and water solution is it possible the bleach can remove color from the shingles?
