The battle was fought on the banks of the Hydaspes River, which provided a natural advantage to Porus and his elephants.
Despite the odds, Alexander employed clever tactics and successfully maneuvered his troops to defeat Porus. He devised a plan to draw the elephants away from the main battle by creating a gap in his lines, allowing Porus's elephants to charge through. Alexander's archers and javelin throwers targeted the elephants, causing chaos among Porus's ranks. The Macedonian phalanx then engaged Porus's infantry, ultimately gaining the upper hand. Although Alexander emerged victorious, the casualties on both sides were significant. Estimates of the casualties vary widely, and it is challenging to determine precise numbers due to the ancient sources' inconsistencies. According to some accounts, Alexander's army suffered around 1, 000 to 3, 000 casualties, including both killed and wounded. Porus's losses were reportedly higher, with some sources claiming up to 20, 000 of his soldiers were killed or captured. It's important to note that these casualty figures should be taken as rough estimates, as historical accounts from that time are often based on varying and sometimes exaggerated narratives.
