Rolex vs Grand Seiko in 4k UHD

So, is it crazy to compare a Rolex Submariner to a Grand Seiko titanium diver's watch? The more I learn about the extreme quality of Grand Seiko watches and the amazing Spring Drive mechanical movement that Seiko spent decades developing I can say YES. Yes the Grand Seiko is a viable option to consider when buying a high-end sport and everyday timepiece.

The sub just looks nicer and is better proportioned.

You are a KING! I love your GS videos! At this point, you are the GS ambassador for me. Cheers!

I think your videos on GS Springdrives are as objective as they can be. You've established quite reasonably what your likes and preferences are in a watch and how GS Springdrive ticks all of the boxes for you. I don't take it as promoting the brand since you've limited your preference to Springdrive models and there are Hi-Beat movement models which you don't touch. Your videos on this topic offers watch consumers an informed choice. Thank you!

Great review! What is your opinion on similarly priced GS SBGR253 37mm vs a Speedmaster coaxial 38mm in terms of movement, build quality and aesthetics? Thanks

Have you thought about the quartz versions 9F models great prices, finishing is of the same level plus excellent accuracy over a year.

I'm a new subscriber and enjoy your videos, this one included. I've been humming and hawing well over a year whether to buy the Grand Seiko Diver ref. SBGA031. Seeing the diver on your wrist, I'm sold. It's a handsome timepiece. Only two weeks ago I bought my first Grand Seiko Hi-Beat ref.SBGH267, and I love it.

You are changing my mind. I am yet to own a luxury watch but I was thinking of a basic Rolex submariner to lower the price as much as possible, or an Omega Seamaster, but now the GS is a priority, this is the third video I watch talking about GS, and I lived in Tokyo for a whole year, 15 years ago, and have a soft spot towards Japanese made goodies and still got friends there. I will start saving cash, so when I visit Tokyo, buying a GS will be a priority for me. Here in Sweden, GS is not really well known and there is only one shop selling them and they charge a lot....

Shouldn't take trolling and/or banter and/or joking around too seriously. Quite often there's no ill intent either, it's just banter, killing time, get a discussion going that may turn interesting, etc. :)

rolex makes a very good watch but it is factory made watch so its not really a high end hand made watch
the grand seiko is also a manufactured watch but it is also completely hand assembled for what it worth.
much of the price of the rolex is due to very high labor costs in switzerland but much is also just charging what the hype is worth, Rolex really did the boutique shop and a super well done advertizing campagine getting their watches into moves on stars and in sports. Seiko did not even export the grand seiko till abut fifteen or so years ago. but both the seiko forum and the rolex forum, agreed the detailing, the fit and finish on the seiko better than the rolex the majort complaing form the Rolex crowd was "who wants a luxery watch that says seiko on it. The usual Japanese marketing ploy with the auto makers is to badge thier high end cars with different name like accura or infinity and so one which seems to work really well.
Rolex has been bragging about the hand work done on thier watches but if you do the math it may be a bit over hyped. Rolex makes some where between seven hundred fifty thousand to a million watches a year its would take a veritable army of watch makers to be able to spend much more than five minutes on one. Rolex makes a fine machine made watch and lives on hype. Grand seiko hid their high end watchs for the home market only not just for snobbery ther but also thier biggest market the usa seem very uninterested in them
I got my first gs in 1970 a gift from my dad who visited Japan the year before, the watch was made in 68 making it share much of the same movement as the the watches that sweept so many places in the mechanical contest and all the places in quartz that the swiss makers told the college they would not participat if seike was invited back. To which the holders of the annual event said that the contests were open to every one so if seiko was barred there would be not contest
and so it happend for several years no contest until an more watered down version which was for swiss makers only.
a great story. after a tune up from a competant wa tch shop cleaned and adjusted that watch five years ago its still doing its plus five minus three seconds a day depending on how active i am. but always very close. I now have three and a marine master three undred which sports the same 28.8 movement as in the grand but not hand assembled. I also have one from 1970 a hand wind high beat, which is also running very close to the same specs, My newst gs is a spring drive i got a great promotional price on in BKK at central workd and i wear that more than the other two. Seiko usually makes dials that are easy to read.

Hopefully Grand Seiko will manage one day to learn how to make proper bracelets and clasps. For now they have nice cases, nice dials, decent movements, but their bracelet/clasp/endlink is worse than 3K watches...

A balance of legibility and style is what Seiko does best. Best dials in the industry, IMHO. Look at the Tuna 600M spring drive, unparalleled!
Great vids as always, Craig. Thanks for your opinions. Many people are stuck with Rolex, mostly because that’s all they know. People that buy GS’s are truly avid watch fans.

Love your videos, but 2 or 3 seconds a week not being good enough!! That's mad. I'd say 99.9 % of all mechanical watches don't meet that spec. I'd be really happy with that a day, not a week.

No Substitute when comes to the Mighty ROLEX Submariner! Bombproof build and can go without a service for years like my Submariner. Mine is 40 years old not had one service and still going.

Thanks again for this video! Look forward to meeting you at Little Treasury. I am very pleased with my GS Snowflake and your comparisons.

One is impeccably finished to a standard without compromise, is accurate beyond a doubt and still reflects the tool heritage of a dive watch.

The other is a Rolex.
