Brown dwarfs are currently one of the most interesting objects of study in astronomy, along with dwarf planets in the Kuiper Belt. This channel keeps us amateur astronomers up to date with the latest discoveries in astronomy. What a pity that astronomy is no longer considered one of the basic sciences in secondary or university education. I first got interested in this subject when I was ten, and at the ripe old age of 73 I am still fascinated by everything beyond earth as well as on earth.

I remember being In middle school and the science teacher Mr Grey talking about brown dwarfs and how dense they are. One spoon having the weight of a skyscraper..or something like that. You know it's a good teacher when they spark your interest and you remember their name over a decade later. Brown dwarfs have been one of my favorite subjects ever since.

Back in the mid 80s when I was in college I happen to take astronomy as my unrelated science, in that class we discussed brown dwarfs and even talked about the possibility of one being the closest star to us at under 4 light years distance.

I suspect the brown dwarf to have some kind of alternator effect going on with a series of heavy dense mass and rotating forces in just the right way for this high energy output to happen, great video, Anton.

Too big and hot to be a planet, too small and dim to be a star. The platypus duckbill of the cosmos!

Thanks, Anton, for the update.

If these auroras around this brown dwarf are so bright and hot, I wonder if they could actually create a "Goldilocks zone" around it where a terrestrial object could host liquid water on its surface, combined with a little tidal heating to keep its own core hot and churning.

I have a soft spot in my heart for brown dwarfs.

Just trying to wrap my brain around how we've (relatively recently) gone from the first exo-planet discoveries, to now we're examining aurora around objects in other star systems. 🤯

Thank you so much for keeping us up with physics and astronomy. I love it, but didn't think I could have taken care of myself being a physicist or being an astronomer since I'd feel too nauseous at high elevations in observatories. You upload about everyday which is amazing to read through all these papers and provide so much knowledge. However, it is also amazing that our knowledge is growing so quickly that you find so much to share.

I think "Northern Lights" should be replaced with "Polar Lights", as they occur at both northern and southern poles. Living in the southern hemisphere, it really gets annoying at times.

Good video.

I have often wondered if the sun itself doesn't have a form of aurora in the form of cosmic particles pulled out of the surrounding sea by the solar magnetic field.

Don't you just love the inexplicable?
Solving mysteries is very exciting but a field of vision obscured by partial understanding is so tantalising!

You can see aurora so that would surely help determine whether there IS a magnetic field there. Thanks man. Good episode.
