This year was the first that I planted Zinnia seeds. They're now my favorite flower. I didn't bother spacing them, I simply scattered them and sprinkled a tad bit of compost over them. At this moment, on Sept. 13, 2023, they're about 4 feet tall. Gorgeous hot pinks and hot oranges. I also planted some mini-Zinnias in some pots. I'm starting to harvest drying flowers to collect the seeds for next year's planting. I don't expect to need to order any more seed packets.

I don't use a ruler. I dig trenches, sprinkle them in the trench, and bury them. Or, I just throw them around and stomp them in. I get beautiful zinnias every year all throughout my gardens. Same with my poppy seeds. I just fling them everywhere from the poppy pods I harvested the previous year, and put into ziploc bags and smash with a hammer. My gardens are so big I have no time to plant seeds one by one. I love big masses of color. It helps to thin them once they start germinating for larger blooms.

I love plants, flowers, and gardening. I planted some seeds from the dollar tree, and they are now over 4 feet tall! I couldn't believe it! I have a flower bed and anything I grow in the bed. I made 15 years ago grow taller than the average height. 😍🥰

I’ve been a zinnia lover for decades. In my world I have failed miserably at starting them indoors. I still plant them directly & then prepare to “do battle” with the onslaught of slugs when they first pop through the soil. They are, by far, the best flower to cheer up my front yard along my picket fence ❤

Even though zinnias can tolerate short periods of drought, Mbofung-Curtis says they'll grow best in moist soil. "Water plants about three times a week so that the soil stays moist to about 6 to 8 inches deep, " she advises. For potted plants, she recommends only watering them when the soil feels dry.

Wasn't a fan of zinnias until a year or so ago. Bought some seeds after seeing someone in my local gardening group growing them. Like them and have grown them again since.
When I deadhead them I scatter sone of the seeds and store the remainder. I have also found they self seed which is a lovely surprise.

I have always grown cosmo seeds with great luck just scattering in my annual containers that still have dirt leftover from the previous year and some seeds in bare spots…I love how wispy and cheerful they look and I get instant flower containers. I have been planting sunflower seeds for the last 2 weeks from seeds I collected last fall; which I do every year.
I live on a hill rocky clay soil with wind/ rain and they just dance in the garden😊
I haven’t grown zinnias but have heard they are easy…going to order some and give it a go😊

Thank you! I learned some new things today. Not sure why, but my late mother, would prep a bed, with a relatively flat and smooth surface. Then she'd just drop zinnia seed here and there...and lightly PRESS them into the topsoil, not even covering them, with dirt. Beautiful zin̈nias....go figure.

This is my first year trying to grow Zinnias. I got tired of the high cost of buying them in greenhouses. I started them inside in peat pots. We were at 81 degrees then it turned cold and I chose to not plant them outside. They are getting a little leggy because of it. Hope to put them outside in a few days when it is suppose to warm back up again.

I throw them in the garden, cover with a bit of compost and up they come. I buy the giant zinnia seeds and stake them.
