The Shure sm57 is the workhorse of the recording studio, and it's like one tenth of the price than the Royer 121...

I think guitar center doesn't know what the fuck they're doing. This guy doesn't even work with people who do anything with guitarists. Guitar Center really needs to do some thinking of who they chose to be in these workshops

wtf does someone who works with kanye know about recording guitars?

Of course guitar center's tequnique involves no tweaking of individual mic placement. You just need $1500 worth of mics and throw them up there.

I think this is the closest anyone has ever sounded to Meshuggah

clean guitar sounds  good, but distorted guitar is a mess...

It's like once you spend the money to sound good then you need to spend the money to pick up the sound via mics. endless journey of gear man...

ok...now let's talk about mixing boards and preamps! I could even get the mics, but I would't be able to make them sound with such that studio-quality without all the others devices. (I mean for the acoustic guitar)

They got Elliot from that movie Open Season playing the guitar.

?!? The 421 and the 57 are completely out of phase here. And the Royer that far away? The Acoustic guitar is cut in the mids as heck...I usually do not bash any colleagues, but: please do your homework! Both guitars sound really awful.

I watched all three videos and I think there is some good information in there to get you started.  The idea is to discover and experiment.  The goal is to capture the magic when it happens.  You never know when or what that will be.  Hopefully the "Record" button is on.

Does anyone knows the best distance to place the mic in front of the amp in a live setting to prevent feedback while avoiding picking up too much of the other sounds on stage thanks?

Another great example that "ear" is the king; not the equipment you use.

They should of just got John Petrucci to be the guitarist in the video.

i feel like im the only one who likes that distorted sound. would have been better with more mids, but the wide sound with only one guitar sounds unique and classic.

Maybe try finding someone that worked on great guitar driven albums (anything where the guitar is prominent in the mix) instead of someone who made shit tone of money recording guitar tracks into a mountain of autotuned bs where it won't even be heard.
