James...my method is the last one you mentioned.
Step 1: run plane along board.
Step 2: curse at the tear out resulting from planing in the wrong direction.
Step 3: flip board around and hope i can remove the tear out.

So you're turning the board after 1st plane passes too, ouffff, not alone ^^ !

Thank you for this video. I often get annoyed that I get the wrong side. Would it be a good idea to make a whole video out of it? Maybe with a todo on crossing fibre directions? Or if you have to plane against the grain, e.g. for glued table tops.

I usually look at the face grain then run my fingers over it to see which way feels rougher, then go with what my fingers tell me. I should really do that process the other way round and only look at the face grain if my fingers can't tell.

So how do you know if you’re planing against the grain? Does it snag and not peel a thin strip?
