Woodworking with hand tools is all about grain direction and reading it. but on some boards, it can be difficult to figure out which direction it is going. here are a few quick tips to reading the grain.

James...my method is the last one you mentioned.
Step 1: run plane along board.
Step 2: curse at the tear out resulting from planing in the wrong direction.
Step 3: flip board around and hope i can remove the tear out.

Thank you for this video. I often get annoyed that I get the wrong side. Would it be a good idea to make a whole video out of it? Maybe with a todo on crossing fibre directions? Or if you have to plane against the grain, e.g. for glued table tops.

I usually look at the face grain then run my fingers over it to see which way feels rougher, then go with what my fingers tell me. I should really do that process the other way round and only look at the face grain if my fingers can't tell.
