Here's our guide to selecting the kit that will keep you the warmest over winter.

When you're layering up over winter, the breathability of your clothing is important to make sure you don't get too damp through sweat. This starts with a good baselayer, which can help wick away the moisture from your skin, leaving you much more comfortable.

Performance cyclists will want a close fit to their clothing, so make sure you're able to try on that winter jacket or jersey to obtain the right fit for you.

While layering can be a good way to regulate your body temperature, you'll be surprised how versatile modern cycling clothing can be - investing in just one or two key pieces should see you though the worst of the weather.

do a review of cheap kit, like the stuff Aldi sell occasionally.

One thing I'd personally add is a buff/neck tube. I find having a cold face really off putting and having the option of covering my face makes a big difference to winter comfort.

I live in Northern Finland and bike all year round. It can get as low as -32C but as far as clothing and biking goes, I find the most important things to keep warm are the hands and head.

I always wear a high vis vest on top of my clothes when biking, that way I do not have to worry about whether the rest of my clothes are bright enough.

If it is minus ten I'd recommend wearing slippers, dressing gown, and sitting by the fire. Inside.

My favorite piece of winter gear is Rapha’s extra high turtleneck “ MEN'S PRO TEAM THERMAL BASE LAYER - LONG SLEEVE”.

Wear stuff you can add or remove to regulate your temperature..I often go out a Daybreak in winter. As well as my bib longs base layer jersey gloves helmet n glasses. I wear a gilet, a buff on my head, and 2 pairs of arm warmers... And as the temp rises a few degrees I can add or remove these small items as required and they fit in my pockets, that way I never too hot or cold throughout my ride... Instead I've got options

-15c here is like spring/fall low lol its usually sits around -20c to -30c with the odd -40 all winter with ice and feet of snow everywhere. ive been too afraid to bike here in the winter, which sucks because winter is half the year. i love your vids and im living through you guys

Depending on where you are living, in the Winter months don't just look at the weather forecast before your ride. Here in Canada minus 10c could easily mean minus 20c when the wind factor is added on. At that point I don't really care about how I look or how aero I am. A good cap under your helmet is also a must as well as good double layered gloves.
To cut on expenses I shop for gloves in work clothing isle, a good double layer highly visible pair of electrician gloves with neoprene finger tips will often cost you half the price and be twice as warm as a good pair of cycling gloves. I also normally put on two sets of tights one on top of the other and when it is very cold I leave my clipless shoes at home, use flat pedals and a good pair of runners or even low profile boots. One last thing, never account for the Sun to keep you warm in Winter. Sudden cloud cover can drop temperature in minutes and make you wish you stayed home.

Is a thermal jersey/windproof top combination better than a softshell thermal jacket?

Great advice! BUT It's so warm this year I'm wearing Spring gear, 3/4 bibs, no booties, summer gilet, arm warmers, flandarian style base layer for some extra warmth early on, but no gabba gear yet! No complaints 🤓🎉 still it is 14c today in East Sussex. Merry Christmas and a happy New Year team.
