An Underrated Horror - Inside A Mind

This is a local video! For local people! There's nothing for you here!
This is a tribute video for the series of The League of Gentlemen. NOT The League of Extraordinary Gentlemen, no, The League of Gentlemen.
The League of Gentlemen has been a theatre show, a radio show, three series on TV, and even a movie: The League of Gentlemen's Apocalypse. And yet, nearly everyone outside of the UK has never heard of it. It's most likely because there's a few shows with the similar name, like the movie, League of Extraordinary Gentlemen that I mentioned earlier. Plus there was also a League of Gentlemen film in the 1960's which was completely different.
So it's not too much of a surprise not many have heard outside of the UK.
But, The League of Gentlemen is one of my favourite shows of all time, and there are only two people who come out after seeing the show. You're either traumatised, or you can't stop laughing.

The show is said to be coming back for a special for it's anniversary. It's most likely not set in Royston Vasey which is what the creators have been saying for a while.

So I decided to make a little tribute video to the show by looking at some of the characters profiles from the past shows.

With the events I talk about this video happened in the league of gentlemen TV Show. The movie, Radio show, and live tours all take place in alternate timelines. So I won't be addressing any of them.

Maybe the reason that nobody but people in the U.K. know about this show is because they aren't Local.

My parents used to watch this and my dad is forever frightened of the phrase “Dave... you’re my wife now”

You can tell he's British when he says the guy owns a REAL gun.

My, what a lovely little town! And such charming residents. Yes, I think I'll certainly have to fly out to pay a visit. I can't wait to taste the locals, er, I mean local dishes. I bet they're to die for.

I have a sign in my garden that says
"Royston Vasey, you'll never leave"

Literally one of the darkest, most brilliant shows ever made. It was popular in Australia, thank God. Thank you for the great video. I think I'll go back and rewatch every episode now.

Fun Fact - Royston Vasey is the real name of Roy Chubby Brown. Who also plays the mayor.

Surprised you didn't mention Papa Lazarou's insistence on calling every woman "Dave" before stealing their rings and claiming them for his wife.

The best thing about this show is the humour.
I know that sounds like a bizarre comment for a comedy show. Of course the humour is the best bit. What I mean though is that it is incredibly unique. The scenes are usually awkward or silly humour, like other British sketch shows, but what makes it unique is that it usually lands on a dark, sad, or uncomfortable note. Each scene feels like a good song that ended on a random flat note. It creates an unnecessary but brilliant tension to the show. It makes you nervous. That is why it makes for a great horror show, because the horror is not the punchline. It's tacked on after the punchline, like an unnerving pause before the next segment. The humour is so unique because of how it is presented... Using the horror to continue and therefore not end a joke but using another joke to not bookend the horror gives no satisfaction, leaving you so uneasy that you never lose tension.

The comedy feels like it is strangling you because the noose of horror has not released but laughing causes the breathing that pushes the noose closer against your neck.

It is disturbing and yet you can not stop laughing, whether it's because the sketch was funny, awkward, or unnerving and that is why it is so unique.

Steve Pemberton is incapable of creating anything less than pure genius. 👀 Love that I found this video 4 years later - didn't think anyone else appreciated this show as much as I did 😂

This was a great review, loved the construction of it. Just one nitpick, Geoff Tipps faked his suicide at his birthday meal, not his friends wedding which was in the previous episode.

I actually found this gem of a tv series through Psychoville. A more recent series by the same guys. Its just as surreal and weird, and the dvd collections of both series (plus the live show dvds) have commentary tracks by the guys on every episode. Funny and explanatory commentaries. Amazing!

I never realised that Papa Lazarou may be immortal! Also, I'm ridiculously excited for the new specials.

“...with her husband and brother.” Nah he probably meant two different people “her husband and brother Edward” okaaaay, definitely the same bloke.

I am OBSESSED with TLOG and anything involving Reece, Steve and Mark. I can't forget Jeremy Dyson since without him, the show wouldn't be the masterpiece it is. But we don't get the chance to form that emotional attachment to him, since he chooses not to act in the show, other than brief, blink-and-you'll-miss-it appearances.
I should mention I'm an American but I learned of the show way back in the early 2, 000's. I was in my mid teens and watched a lot of Comedy Central and they ran it during the late hours time slots. But I really got obsessed with it a few years ago when I came across it on Netflix and got a blast of nostalgia. Lol
