A customer at Wendy’s took a bite of their chili… and found a human finger. What seemed like a horrifying accident quickly spiraled into one of the strangest fast food scandals in history. But how did it get there? Was it a gruesome mistake—or something far more sinister? The deeper investigators dug, the stranger the story became.

The horror of feeling a crunch in food that isn't supposed to be crunchy.

Mountain Dew's legal defense was literally "it couldn't have been there, because our soda is strong enough to decompose corpses".

The most outrageous part of this whole story was that the finger belonged to a third party that didn't even know his discarded digit was being used for financial gain.

I remember when this happened, my dad said that if Rodney Dangerfield was still alive he’d have said, “Man, I tell ya, I get no respect. The other day I got some lunch at Wendy’s, and even the chili gave me the finger!”

I have no clue how Wendy’s ever recovered from this. I remember this being huge news as a kid.

When he cracked open a chilled can of Diet Pepsi and took a swig, he gagged almost immediately. Instead of sweet, crisp, and refreshing soda, his throat was met with something revolting beyond imagination… Diet Pepsi.

Why did I choose THIS to watch with my lunch

Improper use or disposal of human remains is a major offense, but trafficking in human body parts is an even bigger offense. That's why the husband got a longer sentence than the wife. The reason the original owner of the finger didn't get sentenced is because the law generally doesn't punish the person the body part came from even if they willingly sold it.

I lived in the area when the chili thing happened. None of us wanted to eat at that Wendys for years, even after they proved that it was a setup. I remember my step dad asking my mom to get him some chili from there a couple years after. "You really want the chili?" She asked writing all our orders down. "With extra fingers??"

I vaguely remember this happening when I was a kid. I shrugged, never really being into their chili, and ate my nuggies without a second thought lol

Okay but did Pepsi get any kind of warning that the FDA was coming to inspect the place? If so, they could've prepped for it to make sure they got rid of any evidence of wrongdoing. Companies do that a lot to avoid getting shut down or any other repercussions for the sketchy things they do during day-to-day operations.

I experienced a similar (but way less bad) situation as a teenager. I bought a can of fruit cocktail from the grocery store, and when I opened it that night, I found a dead moth floating on the surface! I brought the can back to the store, and the staff were really nice about letting me exchange the can for one with fewer moths, but it was pretty gross in the moment.

I once had a flattened bee in my cereal when I was a kid, which I almost ate until I noticed it floating around in the spoon approaching my mouth. Wish I knew sueing was an option back then lol

What I came for: How Actual Human Meat Ended Up in Wendy’s Food
What I got: a fear of ever drinking soda from a can again

And I thought it was bad when I saw an entire thing of iced tea get dumped into the chili at a Wendy's and the manager said to just serve it as is. Really puts into perspective how you really can never know what's in your food unless you prepare it yourself.

You should do an episode on the woman who got severe burns from a McDonald's drink. Actually a pretty sad story.
