Thanks for this. We forget how important the underlying habits are. Cutting out refined sugar and alcohol also makes a huge difference.

I read about the bed making.

The article said to pull back the bed linens and open the curtains/drapes to allow the sun shine in. It’s supposedly kills dust mites.

Free things I did that really improved my skin is using a clean face towel everyday and putting an end to physical exfoliation

My stress and depression was the culprit in my acne. the classic “you’re dirty, you probably don’t …” non solicited comments that really hurt…So I taught myself to over strip my skin … scarred myself for popping things that needed to be left alone. 😅 we live we learn

So I am one of the people who actually hates drinking water. I cannot explain why. Once I started using the tiniest amount of water flavoring drops, I started drinking enough water for the first time in my life. I did actually see a small difference in my skin.

I will jump on Jen's bandwagon here regarding hydration: I have a medical condition that severely limits the total amount of *anything I can consume during the day, I usually average about 36oz total (liquid, any type of solid food, literally everything). Dehydration is so real. Even with regular Iv infusions it was still so bad that my eyes were dry even if I got something in them they just couldn't water; just imagine what type of crypt keeper skin I had/have. I use a no sugar/flavor/caffeine added hydration booster in anything that passes my lips -it has the electrolytes that allow the water to actually enter my cells and be useable - and after a few months I'm noticing very real changes.
You don't have to be clinically critically dehydrated for your body to show signs, even moderate chronic dehydration will have a very real effect as your body will shunt what liquid it has to immediately life threatening spaces like blood, csf, digestive, etc leaving your skin last

😂LOL. My answer to my family anytime they tell me something hurts or they are tired is Drink Water. If you don't like water, Bigelow makes cold infusion tea bags that add flavor and no sugar or artificial sweetener. It has helped all of us drink more water. Dehydration can affect everything about how you feel.

My youngest two kiddos got fairly substantial acne. Thankfully, we were able to take them to the derm. In regards to the hot it also increases oil in our hair follicles and leads to MORE oily hair, which leads to more washing, which leads to drying out, which leads to more oil production!!! The derm said that if you can't stop the soothing hot shower and shampooing, a couple minutes of a cool rinse at the end is helpful! Then get out and moisturize to the sky!!! Thanks for such a great, informative, and helpful video, Jen! Blessings to all! ✌🏼💚🙏🏼

I was watching this TikTok a few weeks ago and the creator said she airs out her bed before making it. I thought, that makes total sense. We’ve just spent 8 hrs in bed, probably sweating at some point. I need to make sure everything is dry before covering the bed up. So now I do that every morning 😊

When my skin barrier is messed up, slathering on petroleum jelly after my moisturiser at night helps much. I wake up the next morning and my skin feels juicy, it feels hydrated and the sensitivity from the damaged skin barrier is a lot lot better. Vaseline/Petroleum Jelly has saved my skin many times

Korean beauty is so good for affordable and effective skin care. They are light years ahead in sunscreens. James Welsh always has fabulous recommendations.
I don't drink a lot of plain water, so I use water flavorings and it's been a real game changer over the last few years.
Thank you for sharing! 💗💗💗

I get it totally, I do spend money on products that my skin loves. I can’t drink water and have chronic dehydration and hypomagnesia etc. I think many people could afford to invest in their skin more but would rather spend money on nights out and holidays which are detrimental to skin. Our skin is our armour we should always put it first and spend money on it and not look for hacks and easy af techniques to care for skin when we will happier sink hundreds into alcohol and sitting in the sun on the beach!

Water is my only thing I drink except for 1 cup is coffee in the morning and a cup of sleepy time tea at night. I think it’s been 40 yrs of just water. I do love it!

One of the videos that the channel Doctorly have said which I really like regarding skincare from board cert dermatologists have said that the quality of your water that you wash with can also affect the face and body as well which makes very much sense cause I noticed when I moved from one area of town or state to another, my skin is different and I didnt change my regimen or products so it HAS to be the water. So when I watched that video, I had that AHA! moment 😊

Jen, I have been hearing YOUR voice in my head while choosing lip balms, hand lotions, and now I’m sure I’ll be doing the same when I choose my facial cleansers, moisturizers, etc.., and when I’m washing my sheets twice a week, instead of my usual just on Sundays! If urea isn’t at the top somewhere, I won’t even bother! Thank you for always sharing so much of your knowledge!

Hello Jen, thank you very much for doing the research also, saving us money

I completely agree: look at store generics for moisturizer and cleansers. Often brands will have their dupes of the already cheaper brands, with the same ingredients. (Example: I got a 20.3oz bottle of lotion Up&Up, a Target brand, for $4... Dupe for Vaseline Intensive Care Advance Repair Unscented.... Great for body and face, for dry skin times).

Amazon also has their own generic brand of skincare (including CeraVe dupes)

All of your videos are great (I’m a long time viewer) but this is one of the extraordinary ones 🙌

Seeing you grow as a science communicator over the last few years has been so fun. You’re really doing a great job bridging the gap between academic research and general population.

This video is FIRE! This is the video skin care companies DON'T want you to see! Very well done, very well researched.
