During the height of the space race, NASA requested the help of Air Force Aeronautical Chart and Information Center and Army Map Service (NGA legacy organizations) to map and survey the moon. However, one request was pretty large - or well almost as large as the moon itself.
It was called the lunar module simulator. It was built to provide astronauts with a view of the moon as it would appear during approach, landing , and takeoff. (Spoiler alert: it worked)
In our latest Mapping Moments learn more about the lunar mapping and simulator that helped launch one of the most amazing accomplishments of the 20th century!
