In this video I have a look at a customer's 2011 Hyundai Sonata that has the infamous glowing check engine light with codes for an EVAP leak. The customer tried tossing a few parts at it but none of them stuck so now we have to see what's really wrong with it so he can get it fixed.
-Enjoy!

Thank you so much for the support!

I'm the owner of this Sonata. For clarity....The only reason I kept the car was that a brand new engine was warrantied into it at 100k. In hindsight I should have sold it immediately after the engine instal. As far as the shotgun approach to repair....I bought what was cheap enough and easy enough to do, I spent less than $100 on the parts I knew I could get to In my driveway hoping I could catch an easy fix. Money wasted...yup . Once I dug in all signs were leading away from easy... The trunk was cleared and shop vaced just as a show of respect for a fellow working man. These guys were great...couldnt be happier....car has been inspected and sold.

"Now I know how you feel every time you look like this."

Funniest line in SMA history!

This has everything: mastery of the FTC, a ticking car suggesting a bomb, a fruitless search for bodies, an assist from Mrs. O, and a Luna sighting.

Thanx for double checking that everything was connected at the tank. My wife took her Isuzu Trooper into the local dealer for some kind of recall and they 'forgot' to connect the filler pipe. Things got real exciting the first time she filled up after.

You sir, are an amazing diagnostic technician! It’s just astounding that you can find these problems when others can’t. No matter if it’s physical (environmental), electrical or mechanical! The only thing I cannot discern from these videos is how much time you take to just find the problem! No doubt, you are a God send to your community, no matter what you charge them! In my 70 years, I have only come across TWO auto technicians with your knowledge and ethics, but they sadly, are long gone. Keep it up Eric for a few more years. Then either retire to the front office or out of the industry for good, before you are afflicted with inevitable debilitating arthritis in the arms and hands like my brother. He was also an ethical master mechanic for the last 55 years or so and is suffering greatly from arthritis today!

I used to have a 97 suburban. Was changing the fuel pump. Had the tank partially dropped, only to discover that the previous owner cut out an access panel 🤣. They did a neat job too. Made a cover for it.

Tip for ERIC
GO TO YOUR LOCAL HVAC PARTS HOUSE AND PURCHASE A BOTTLE OF " BIG BLUE " will bubble like crazy. If it's a small leak, the bubbles will look like shaving cream. Fantastic soap for very small leaks

Eric just wanted to say I appreciate your videos and all the knowledge you choose to share with us. Been watching off and on for 9 years now. As a young guy I have learned to diagnose and repair my own problems on personal vehicles thanks to you and the rest of the automotive community on YouTube

Autozone said I needed a wiper motor. When I changed a battery in a Ford Escape SE, failure to attachment the second cow to the frame. Wiper would not work. When home an install the 2 cow and clips and to the frame. Wipers worked after that. Great video Eric O 19:37

My wife's car had a bad gas smell on her 2011 Cataract DTS and it did have the access panel in the trunk. Upshot was meeses. Chewed through the line, didn't care for the octane we use and quit. I was able to replace line without removing the tank, which requires dropping rear sub assembly. Nother Cadillac trick of engineering. And is still running to this day. It is for sale though if you want a nice cruiser... Thought not. Well, worth a shot... I have learned so much on the evap system watchin your vids and I never tire of them. Common problem it seems and never hurts to pay attention to the teacher. Many thanks, Eric As always, A pleasure.
