You got the last part wrong, when a bullet is fired without being in a chamber the gas expands in the path of least resistance which would be the casing. The bullet will probably go up a bit but with very little speed. The reason why this trap was effective was because it injured the foot of the soldier making them need medical aid and take them away from fighting.
