I haven't clicked with any of the covers of this song, and I think your explanation just shows why.
I don't think any of the artists that tried covering this song (which, bless them, they're awesome too but you can't win them all) didn't quite get those nuances you pointed out, giving a very different tone to the song that I definitely didn't vibe with.
