Imagine getting annoyed that someone believed you when you answered disingenuously to a perfectly reasonable question.

I legitimately thought part of the joke here was that she hadn't realised that she'd time traveled back a bit to maybe the 60s or 50s

As a Welshman, this is an odd scene. Firstly all the accents I can’t place and just sound off, so im assuming are not Welsh actors. Secondly, this is a perfectly valid question anywhere in the UK and you would not be treated like this. Everything about this scene is odd and unfamiliar, and certainly would not summarise as “Welsh humour at its finest”.

It is so easy to be unpleasant people isn’t it?

Horseshit. Perfectly valid question. Lots of places still don't accept it. I still ask if places will accept a debit card.

This does a diservice to all welsh humour

Its a perfectly okay thing to ask. I have half the stores where I live who can't do apple pay and half can. My FedEx doesn't even have a chip reader they make you swipe your card still.

Old lady: Pretends to not know anything about taking a card payment with a phone
Also her: gets mad when girl thinks she doesn’t know anything about taking card payment with a phone

Legend has it they switched from talking in English to Welsh when that young lady walked in.

I haven't seen the episode, but did the writer realise that this isn't 'egg on Ruby's face', the locals just come across as absolute ars*h*les? Not everywhere does contactless these days, so it's polite to check instead of assuming. If this interaction isn't plot- or character-relevant, it's mad, and I don't know what the result was meant to be

She asked if she could pay with her phone. And the barkeep asked how do you pay with your phone. The young lady was nothing but polite/honest. Am I suppose to laugh❓

Why are they giving her attitude? She didnt ask in a snarky way. Lots of places still dont have tap to pay. It's normal to ask.

Tbf to ruby before the pandemic there were still tons of shops and pubs that didnt take card, especially in the countryside (and still at a ton of chinese takeaways). So not the craziest thing to ask, funny scene tho.

I work in a members club in Wales and we don't take card or phone payments because we don't want the banks taking a cut of our profits. It's cash only and it means I get tips as well which I would never get otherwise.

Lol from what I have heard from my welsh friends this scene sums up what people by in large think about the valleys, even some people from the valleys joking about stuff like this and worse xD

At this point in the episode I don’t think they had established when it was, so I thought this was before digital pay existed, or just in a dystopian future thanks to Roger Ap Gwilliam (previously mentioned by the Doctor). It wasn’t till Ruby’s adopted mother showed up at her apartment that I realized it was 2024.

a few years ago a woman in Cornwall got grumpy with me because i wanted to make a payment under £10 with a card. She said they didn't do that there was a charge. I haven't heard that in like a decade... i had to borrow cash off someone, since i haven't needed to carry any in years...Maybe i'll try paying with my phone next time...
