Crowd actions make a difference to players. I was with my son at an American football tournament. Early to mid teenage levels. My son was in the older group. I had brought a pop-up tent for shade and others gravitated to it. I told all they could join the shade if they cheered for my son's team, and they did. The boys were notably encouraged. During a later game of younger players, their people were too quiet and the boys struggling. I leaned on them all about cheering their boys on, and lead the group. As those families got louder, their boys came alive on the field. They rallied from behind and won.
Sports is not the theater. It is a live performance that needs its fans during the performance, not politely at the end.
