I took my whole high school drivers ed test turing left when he said right and right when he said left. One stop light the instructor was staring at me and the kids were giggling in the back. I asked what?? Back at school instructor got out of the car to grade me, and I asked the kids back what was so funny and they told me what I did…. Every time! Still do to this day..
When I was little I told my brother I always felt that my left hand should be my right when i was adamant about it too! Never will forget that. Thank you for mentioning difficulties sounding out words, this is a huge struggle for me. I just believed it was me not being smart. My husband often helps me.

I really think i have mild dyslexia. For example, when i see the word.. United, my brain first says: Untied. Then I have to correct myself.
Figuring out the pronunciation of unfamiliar words is a challenge.

My parents knew that there was a good chance that they would have a dyslexic child. As I became old enough to show signs of dyslexia, I did. Once my mother was told that if she read more to me I wouldn’t be behind. My mother came up with many sarcastic comebacks to that. The truth was that she read to me the same about as my brothers. My older brother taught himself how to read very young so in reality the best reader ended up being read to the least. One thing my parents noticed was that when they read to us my brothers would follow along while I only listened. My mother would pick a word that was common in the book and she would tap it every time it appeared. Both of my brothers were able to identify theatrical chosen word by the end of the story but I couldn’t. An example for a word my mom would pick is “I” or “am”. I am a twin so it was very clear that there was a difference between me and my brothers. As I grew older my parents did the best that they could to help me with what I needed at that moment. I remember when I was about to become a teen my parents started looking into how dyslexia affects teens and adults most commonly. That is when they learned that they are both dyslexic but mild. My mother remembered how she always felt like she needed a little more time on tests in school and never learned to read for fun. My father remembered getting hit with a paddle for issues of “laziness” but in reality looking back him and the other “bad” kids were being punished for symptoms of dyslexia and ADHD. My parents did their best to not let me suffer in school like they had. My mother encouraged my love for reading despite not being fluent at it and my father reminded me that I can always ask for help and if I got in trouble for needing help, he’s got my back. With my parents help I flourish academically as a teen. They noticed things that would have been missed compared to me and realized my twin was probably dyslexic too but mild. After getting him tested their suspicions were confirmed. My mother’s dyslexia is a lot like my twin brother’s. Both easily missed to a sibling more dyslexic. My uncle was able to get the help he needed but his dyslexia made it hard to notice my mother’s dyslexia. My father’s dyslexia was never noticed because the person helping him with his homework, my grandmother, is even more dyslexic than my dad. She didn’t notice that my dad was slow to learn how to read when he was learning much faster than what she had. It’s important to find and help children like me who are caught early but it is important to not miss those like my brother or my parents. My parents were the first ones in my family to brake the cycle of mild dyslexics slipping through the cracks because they are compared to someone who struggles more with dyslexia.

I homeschooled two dyslexics and one is dysgraphic as well. I discovered I have dyslexia when my son (1st child) was diagnosed. Coping mechanisms are amazing to me.
My son was referred to as a reading dyslexic. At age of 7 he could read middle school level books and verbally tell the overall story back to someone. He would miss finer details if asked specific questions. At the age of 7 he had a highschool verbal vocabulary. He could not read easy reader books out loud and tell any part of the story. He also could not spell anything, even simple sight words. What was "wat". There is so much more to the story but to any parent worried about their child. He is an electrical engineer. Your child will be fine as long as the help is there for the child. My daughter dyslexia was caught and assistance was given much sooner. She did develop large discrepancies in language abilities.
Side note for anyone that has read this far. My son never lost his love of vocabulary. His current favorite word to use in public is defenestration.

At 72 years old, dyslexia affects me every day. I listen to books, but reading one as arduous, I have never been able to spell partially because I have to study a letter to see if it is a “b” or a “d” but also all vowels sound the same. I left a career I loved because “6” and “8” and “9” take time to study and figure out which is which. There are many many more examples. I am happy that it can be identified and special care can be taken with these kids. 65 years ago the label was just “stupid” or “retarded”.

Heheh I have thatttt and I also have terrible eyes lol I’ve done Barten for almost 7yr and I just finished it last month. Barten is a tutoring book that helps reteach dyslexic brains in a way that is easier for them and show dyslexic people how their brains work and the easiest ways to help them figure out the best ways to help this learning challenge. I absolutely loved doing it and I have definitely see an improvement over the last 7yrs. Like he said it can’t just be cured but there are was to help it! I also did eye therapy to help refocus my lazy eye, strengthen them and help my eye hand coordination :))

I was diagnosed as dyslexic when I was super young, never knew it till I was hospitalized for an unrelated thing and looked over my medical record a while later. Asked my mom and she told me lmao... For me I just misspell some words, and read the wrong words a lot. I actually won the spelling bee in elementary school one year though lol

My brother is dyslexic, in his mid 30s and still a NEET. It's frustrating because imo it feels like he assumes the diagnosis gives him permission to not even put in any effort into anything. All he does is play video games all day.

I heard: dyslexia is a learnt disability

Those with dyslexia must work harder than others to learn to read and write. IEPs are not fix-alls. Truth, expectations, accountability, encouragement, and lots of support help the most. Help children, with or without disabilities, to look at and see their personal growth from their effort rather than focusing only on grades; teach them to be glad for their peers and not compare themselves to others; and don't make excuses or accept avoidance behaviors when the work gets hard.

And this is why those stupid language-nerds should stop pointing out to people making a mistake in their spellings. As long as you understand what is being told, it should be fine.

Does a person with dyslexia have it in every language they learn? Are some languages less or more prone to dyslexia than others?
