I think these content creators are getting older and what they wanted in life when they were 20 is very different now at 30. Life goals change. Spending every waking moment editing and filming might have been cool at 24, but at 34, it is sucking away the little time that we have in our lives.

Been a silent viewer for over 10 years -- I admire your work ethic, energy, drive, ability to be real and vulnerable and stick true to yourself over the years. You're one of the very few creators (I can count on one hand) that I've watched for so long. Had the opportunity of working with you a few years ago (with Shuttr) for a brand I had at the time -- your platform was a big help at the time and we were able to get some nice photos that added a lot of brand value!

You make a lot of good points. But people are burning out in lots of different jobs because no one is really working 9-5. So many people have multiple jobs, side hustles or work long hours due to the higher cost of living. Also, people aren't satisfied working the same job for decades like they used to. Those days are over for most.

Truth be told, content creation is not as easy as it looks, AT ALL. Plus, the fact that it can be so volatile in nature puts an incredible amount of pressure.

I've been self employed all my life (never in any kind of media business like you Shelby), and once I started to do more I figured the next natural step was to hire people, and do even more business. Got to where I had about 12 employees most of the time, high tech expensive people, and I hated it. Found myself taking on clients I knew would be a problem but needed them for the cash flow to support the overhead. Finally figured out that I was happiest when it was just me. You might make a little more money when business is great, but it sure sucks when your killing yourself to feed the beast when things slow down a little. Now it's just me, has been for years and I have a great life. If I can make a suggestion to someone starting out in business who is younger, which will probably be most everybody reading this at this point, find a niche in something, just one thing, and get so good at it that you're the only one people think of for that particular job. When you're so good that you "own" the skillset, no one can take it away from you. And you'll never want for work.

I’ve been an OG follower of Emma - like pre 50k or less. It’s been exciting to see her growth, but I do miss connecting with her more 1 on 1. She used to answer my comments and connect with my tweets. Now watching her videos is like watching a movie - one way entertainment. There’s no connectivity. I think that’s what’s fun about TikTok/IG for me is talking in the comments. Good insight Shelby! Love that you’re still creating all these years and changes have been fun to watch! Hope you have a great day ❤

A lot of this applies to a lot of self employed people! I hired a team and hated that all I did was manage people instead of doing the job I love. Now I only have one employee and she is my daughter! Work is fun again! I do YouTube on the side for fun. Social media is an absolute MUST for my business. It is a lot of work, but I’m 10 years in and still enjoying it.❤

lifestyle YouTubers are unsung heroes, with tips or inspo to make sensible people’s lives at least incrementally better - but with thousands of people per day, it adds up really fast. This is so much more useful than flashy topics like “Today I’ll go over the top ten reasons for you to become an astronaut. Let’s get right into it!”

In any profession people find themselves in jobs or roles that no longer serve them. I think it's healthy for a person to be able to recognize when they are in such a situation, and to adjust accordingly.

Oh my gosh. YES! Seriously, when short form content came out in TikTok and Instagram, it completely threw me off of my YouTube game, and I feel like my channel tanked because I wasn’t being consistent. Well, not being able to keep up with all the other things and leaving me burnt out. I recently deleted Instagram, however, I will Still be on it but not put so much energy into it and it sparked so much more creativity towards planning YouTube videos again!❤

I am old school and when I was 15 I started watching YouTube. I don’t have tiktok and I only watch YouTube, if they all quit then great I’ll have more free time to do me I guess. I just hate how addictive all of these apps are. I am already addicted to YouTube. So if it dies I’ll be ok. Anyways I love your content and I am always watching you! You are very authentic

I think balance is important in any job. I gave myself to nursing for the last 16 years and im beyond burned out. I think having a foot in a "real job" and a YouTube job is probably the best balance if you can do both part time and have a decent income

Have def noticed a lot of YouTuber's quitting over the past few years. A good chunk of big name YouTuber's are stressed and overwhelmed behind the scenes.

This is not only good insight and great advice for content creators but also for anyone who is self employed.

Loved this new style of video Shelby! It's a great middle ground between your vlog content and your higher production main channel stuff. Would love to see more of this casual commentary style content!

Loveee this video. As a small YouTuber my original goal was to go full time, but I’ve gotten a taste of the stress and pressure that comes with it and now I try to make sure I’m just doing it for fun as a little paid hobby.

Loved that you posted this on your vlog channel and I really enjoyed this format too! Felt like a podcast/main channel video combo :)

Shelby, others have tried to "explain" but no one has done it with the clarity and perspective you brought to this topic. Thank you for your efforts. You and your efforts are appreciated.

I'm sad to see some of the people I follow post less and less on Youtube. I'm not into the short form content as much. I admire your hard work Shelby. I've learned a lot from your main channel and the behind the scenes of YouTube and have more appreciation for any content creator out there because it is a lot of work. Thanks for the great video as always.

This is good advice and insight for anyone who has their own YouTube channel or is wondering what it would really be like to be a creator.
I think it's great that you give these insights from your personal experience!

Loved this video format Shelby, and the honesty! I work a full time job alongside YouTube and I just shared this video with my team (we’re a creator economy company) because the insights you shared here are so great 👏🏻
