Benny Goodman 'Don't Be That Way'

"Don't Be That Way" written by Edgar Sampson, Benny Goodman, and Mitchell Parish was Benny Goodman's opening number in his famous Carnegie Hall Concert on January 16, 1938. A month later he recorded it for RCA Victor and it became a number 1 hit. As with "Sing, Sing, Sing," "Let's Dance," and "And the Angels Sing, "Don't Be That Way" has been strongly associated with Benny Goodman. This is being posted for my subscriber 1968LEONE1. I saw him In Houstom around 1980 at the Summit. They turned the basketball court for the Houston Rockets into a big dance floor. I was 26 at the time. I still listen to him. Have him on right now.

My Mom, though a teen in 50’s, and a lover of early Rock and Roll (She saw Elvis perform on a river boat right after he had cut his first 45 at Sun.) _loved_ big band music. I grew up listening to her Time-Life Swing Era collection. When I was about ten, she scraped up the money from somewhere for amazing seats and took my sister and me to see Benny Goodman and his band play a one night engagement
At the Kennedy Center.

Love it, both words & music!

"April skies are in your eyes
But darling, don't be blue

Don't cry,
Oh honey please
Don't be that way

Clouds in the sky
Should never make you feel that way

The rain
Will bring the violets of May
Tears are in vain
So honey please don't be that way

As long as we
See it through
You'll have me
I'll have you
Sweetheart

Tomorrow is another day
Don't break my heart
Oh honey, please don't be that way"

Real music, real people. Better times
I'm surprised his headstone is so modest.

I have liked this song ever since I was age 13, during 1974. I used to listen to Big Band back then. I watched the Lawrence Welk show on tv as a child. My dad was into all that music, and I grew up hearing it.

When music was pleasing and satisfying to listen to. I long for those days. Benny Goodman, Glenn Miller, Artie Shaw, Jimmy Dorsey, and many other greats.

Though I heard this song before, yesterday I realized I love it so much that I would listen to it a thousand times non stop. I wish this song was longer. I don´t know, I think there is something in those saxophones that trapped me. I know very little about jazz and especially swing, but I always liked their hit tunes.
