It’s not good to expose garlic to sunlight, just fyi. And high temps can split the bulb, leading to greater chance of rot further on. Drying in a shaded area with good airflow is best. A dry spot in your house/garage works great

Harvesting garlic is the best! I plant late October in NH and harvest mid July. A 9 month wait, doesn't seem possible does it? I have 165 head now, plenty for next year's crop, eating fresh and especially dehydrating for garlic powder which is my main thing. That's a successful crop, great job.

You should have cut the scapes (lomg flower part) when it had 1 full curl. By doing this it will send more energy to the bulb growth resulting in bigger even more flavorful cloves. I also never wash mine, just wipe dirt off and put on racks for curing but some do wash, just dont leave on the sun for too long, a couple hours is fine if the UV index isnt too high. My garlic still has a few weeks left here in Canada, but garlic is my main crop with 20, 000 planted this year all by hand mostly by myself.

WEll, I don't wash my garlic or leave them in the sun to dry. I brush off the dirt with my hand and leave them on a wire shelf in the shade for about 10 days. Cut off the stems after that and then bag them.

Enough to keep the vampires off! Wonder if it works on politicians..

Eat the scapes they’re delicious and you’ll get bigger cloves.

Great harvest but try weaving them together and hanging up to dry!! My onions turn out good like that and less space taken up!! 🎉

1) Scape is the best part of the garlic!
2) don’t wash it!
3) sun burned garlic has shorten storage time.

I hang mine in front of a fan after harvest. it cures them really well and they can last over a year.

To those saying he should have cut the scapes... It sure doesn't look like it made a huge difference. Those are still nice bulbs! And he could use the bulbils that developed on the scapes to plant new baby garlic plants in the fall that will be ready in 2-3 years. Great way to bulk up your stock of garlic without spending more money!

Fabulous! Could you leave them in the sun for longer instead of curing in the garage?

I left mine out, and some of them developed a blue-green color to them. Has that happened to you before? Could they still be useful?

Not good to wash it or expose to sun light. It will reduce the shelf life.

Beautiful. I need help. For the past two years I planted my hardneck garlic at the appropriate time in the fall. I planted in grow bags in well draining soil. They were all missing in the spring. So, last year I planted again and I put netting over to make sure animals didn’t get in and they were all missing again. Any thoughts? There was not even a piece of one or its paper. I’m in Chicago, I can’t see how they would have composted in the freezing weather. Maybe some kind of bugs. Rolly pollies?
