My parents were genius packers and possibly crazy. In 1960, they packed a 4 by 6 foot camper. They loaded the station wagon without air conditioning and 5 kids, 2 still in diapers. The trip a southern route from Ohio to California, then up the coast to Seattle and back to Ohio. We might have eaten at a restaurant once. Otherwise, they were cooked on a 2 burner campstove.
Groceries were replenished. They did need to buy an additional sleeping bag and spend a day in Seattle getting a replacement lens for my sister's glasses, which shattered while waiting for a shower. Great memories with a snowball fight on our brother's 4th of July birthday.

Good tips!
We’ve have 4 trips to the US (from Australia) and driven through about 30 or so states. My advice to foreigners is to use large paper maps and road atlases when planning routes. Don’t just use gps - you miss out on too much and don’t get a good idea of the lay of the land.

It is a real pleasure for me to visit the Visitor centers in the US. The staff there is always so nice and kind and even that I am always pretty good prepared for what I will see there are always some additional interesting information that I receive from them! Love the US National Parks, the annual pass and the whole organization there! 💛💛💛 Hope to visit the US again very soon.

Awesome tips Mark! Not sure I’d know where to start with a paper map, but great to have as a back up!

@1:59 *_Bring food for meals, not just snacks_* 👍
We rent a cabin every year for a guys' trip and one person is responsible for one home cooked dinner. (We all throw in a ten spot to pay for the food.) A friend started this a long time ago by surprising all of us with ribeyes and potatoes. Ever since, it's a tradition to try and outdo last year's meal. We've had burgers, spag bol, Cincinnati chili, beef stew, chicken souvlaki, fajitas, pork chops and even pulled pork and swordfish. 😂

We keep a picnic blanket and camp chairs in our car. Helpful when the restaurants are to-go only.

This may be a bit biased, coming from a radio operator, but a CB radio is a great asset to have for a road trip. It is a great way to pass time chatting with other truck drivers (and some 4 wheelers), in addition to being a good source of info regarding traffic jams, info, alternate routes. While it may not replace a mobile phone, if you ever needed some help, I’m sure you could reach someone on Channel 19 if you’re near a route with truck traffic. The CB radio is not a gimmick, nor is it a toy. It really is a useful tool to communicate with others and share info.

One more thing, this isn’t the 1970s anymore, so don’t talk like Burt Reynolds did in Smokey and the Bandit. You can find other videos on YouTube for more info.

I bring a power inverter and strip as well. Great for multiple devices both in the car and wherever you stay

I just spent two weeks traveling through New England, I did not bring cleaning supplies, if I cannot trust a hotel to properly clean the room before I check in I shouldn’t be staying there. I am careful but not excessive. Make sure you know how to change a tire, fill fluids and swap wiper blades. Relax and smile at strangers.

I've never sh*t my pants in adulthood. However I always pack way too much underwear just in case I do it everyday.
