Let me just correct Ben, the Ark was taken away or hidden at the time of the Babylonians, not the Romans. During the Second Temple Period, the Holy of holies was empty.

The Ark has not been seen since the Babylonian’s destroyed Jerusalem. It was not in the second Temple.

Or like some Christians believe, it's just gone, destroyed. Christ has come, so there is no longer a need for an ark of the covenant. The new covenant has been established through Christ and his blood. It is no longer needed. The Holy spirit is within us, so the presence of the Lord is always with us. We no longer need to have something carried out in front of us or go before us, because we have the Lord with us at all times.
