6K Pro Display XDR vs 5K LG Ultrafine - Worth $4700 More?

Is Apple's New Pro Display XDR worth the extra cash over LG's 5K Monitor?

In this video, we compare basically everything from image quality, colors and contrast, viewing angles, design, build quality and much more between the Pro Display XDR and LG's Ultrafine 5K Display.

Although the Pro Display XDR carries a pretty high pricetag, it actually packs features and technology that you can only find on reference monitors that can be priced upwards of $30,000.

It's also the first display built using LCD technology that's able to achieve such a high level of brightness while also getting an excellent contrast ratio similar to what you'd get with an OLED display.

However, there are some issues with it, which we talk about in the video.

There are also a few things that the LG 5k Ultrafine display does better than the Pro Display XDR.

I bought a Pro Display XDR (Standard Glass) to replace my LG 5K and I couldn't be more pleased. I have several LG OLED TVs and once you're spoiled with great contrast it's a let down to view the LG 5K which frankly has poor contrast IMO. The LG 5K also has an issue with burn-in of static images that I noticed the first day I began using it. The XDR shows no burn-in issues at all. The XDR is far and away the best looking computer monitor I've ever seen. Visit an Apple Store to see a XDR in the flesh. It's easy to debate the cost but the picture quality speaks for itself.

I’m wondering if it would be worth it to buy a base model 27” 5K iMac for use as a external monitor. Would only be like $600 more then the LG but still way cheaper than the XDR display.

I also have both of these displays. For $1300 the LG is really really great. This is one of those "diminishing returns" comparisons. The Apple Pro Display XDR is fantastic but is it worth 4x the price? Sort of but if cost is an issue for you, you won't be missing out much by not spending the extra. The LG is great value for the price. But the Apple is on another level in regards to the physical hardware design, materials and elegance. The LG has a glossier coating which reminds me of the old apple cinema displays. The Pro XDR even without the $1000 matte option (mine) is still very matte. But I prefer the matte surface for photography, video and UX design that I do. Just a personal preference and some might be the opposite. In summary, the Pro XDR is not a rip off by any means and if you have the budget I totally recommend it.
