$90 Castle Airbnb in Italy! - Castello di Badia (The Italy Series)
Показать описание
This is Castello Di Badia in Tuscany, Italy. It's a fantastic Airbnb for only $90 a night. It has some pretty interesting history as well. The first mention of the castle dates back to a document dated 25 July 998 , when Hugh of Tuscany gave the adjacent castle of Marturi to the abbot Bonomio (today forming part of the complex). Some have hypothesized that this deed is a forgery, carried out only a few years later, around 1050-1100, to justify the possession of some goods by the Camaldolese monks. In any case, traces of the castle can already be referred to at the end of the 10th century, and the remains of capitals and columns in the vicinity have led to the hypothesis that the site had been in use at least since Roman times.
In 1479 it was involved the territory clashes linked to the consequences of the Pazzi conspiracy , between the Florentine and Neapolitan-Sienese armies: all of the Valdelsa, except the castle of Strozzavolpe , was occupied by the Sienese, as also recalled by the fresco in the hall of the crossbows in the Palazzo Audience of Siena , where the various castles are depicted in the act of lowering the Florentine flag. The castle of the abbey, in particular, was bombed by the opposite castle of Poggio Imperiale (September 8, 1479), destroying a large part of the walls, and effectively entering a long period of neglect.
In 1886 the ruins of the castle and abbey were purchased by Marcello Galli Dunn, who had a walled castle rebuilt there in the neo-Gothic style , making it his private residence. In 1896. The only remains of the original castle are in sections of the walls.
