Werribee Open Range Zoo has welcomed the birth of a small but mighty lion cub. No siblings, no rivalry - just a single little cub, already proving that greatness starts with the power of one.
The healthy cub was born in the evening of Sunday March 23 following a three-and-a-half-month pregnancy to first-time, seven-year-old mother Asali and eight-year-old male Sheru.

I am so happy for mum. A healthy baby girl and she is safe living in Werribee Park, no poaches or farmers to bother her. Thank you for sharing this and I am sure you will keep us updated.

I love how the keepers are so knowledgeable about growth milestones. And so very careful with the right conditions for mum and bub.
Yes we all want to see them, but their health comes first. Perfect!

Such a proud moment for mama and baby definitely looks strong. It's a pity she won't have litter mates to grow and play with as they learn so many life skills through play. Hopefully her young cousins will play gently with her.

Ohh, she’s so tiny …
Hope she survives and thrives.
Well done Werribee.

Love how the male lion grooms himself exactly the same way my dear old moggy does...felines doing feline things ❤️

Good thing it's a lion and not a cheetah. If it were a cheetah, the keepers would have to hand-rear it because for some reason if a cheetah has only 1 cub her milk doesn't flow so she has to abandon it and mate again in order to produce another litter. Luckily lions can care for a single cub.
