How To Know When A Person With Dementia Is Nearing The End of Life #hospice #palliativecare
Dementia is an umbrella term for multiple different brain diseases and the symptoms that go along with those brain diseases. There are many different types of brain diseases that therefore fall under this generic umbrella term: Vascular Dementia, Alzheimer's Disease, Frontotemporal Dementia, Lewy Body dementia, Parkinson's Disease, Huntington's Disease, HIV (later stages), Crutzfeldt-Jakob Disease, Kosakoff Syndrome, alcohol related dementia, head trauma, corticobasal degeneration, progressive supranuclear palsy, and even some advanced stages of Multiple Sclerosis.
Many people with dementia decline physically and functionally at a fairly slow rate. Often people with dementia will live for years with long periods of plateau in their overall health. Depending on the type and severity of the dementia, life expectancy may range from 8 - 20 + years.
For this reason it can be hard to know when a person with dementia is nearing death. In this video we'll talk about one of the biggest signs to look out for to identify when a person with dementia may be nearing death.
