The region’s most promising healthcare innovators were shortlisted for the Bright Ideas in Health Awards 2015.

Some of this year’s innovations included a specially-developed device to help calm dementia patients undergoing X-rays and a mask for diabetic patients with sight complications.

Finalists in the Service Improvement category:

• CRESTA Fatigue Clinic - Professor Julia Newton, Honorary Consultant Physician at The Newcastle upon Tyne Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust

• Care Closer to Home Protocol for Prostate Cancer Patients – Lorraine Montgomery, Specialist Nurse Practitioner Urology at Gateshead Health NHS Foundation Trust

• Services for Children and Young People with Type 1 Diabetes - Liz Allan, Telehealth Engagement Lead at NHS England

• Integrated Partnership Pathway for Neuro Rehabilitation - David Muir, Directorate Manager at Northumberland, Tyne & Wear NHS Foundation Trust and Boda Gallon, CEO, Keiro Group

The Bright Ideas in Health Awards, organised by the Academic Health Science Network for the North East and North Cumbria (AHSN NENC), celebrate the achievements of individuals and teams working within the NHS, industry and academia, who have risen to the challenge of telling us how and where they believe that the services provided to patients can be improved, either through a technical innovation or through better service delivery.
