The region’s most promising healthcare innovators were shortlisted for the Bright Ideas in Health Awards 2015.

Some of this year’s innovations included a specially-developed device to help calm dementia patients undergoing X-rays and a mask for diabetic patients with sight complications.

Finalists in the Innovative Technology Device category:

• Dementia Patients Undergoing X-Ray – Karen Ainsworth, Sister at South Tees Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust

• Migraine Therapy – Dr Jitka Vanderpol, Consultant Neurologist at Cumbria Partnerships NHS Foundation Trust.

• Non-Nutritive Chewing - Saskia Grassie, Children's Occupational Therapist at South Tyneside NHS Foundation Trust

• Audiology Testing for Neonates- Lynn Pattison, Back Care Advisor at County Durham and Darlington NHS Foundation Trust

The Bright Ideas in Health Awards, organised by the Academic Health Science Network for the North East and North Cumbria (AHSN NENC), celebrate the achievements of individuals and teams working within the NHS, industry and academia, who have risen to the challenge of telling us how and where they believe that the services provided to patients can be improved, either through a technical innovation or through better service delivery.
