I love these older guns. The difference between all these guns is definitely very defined, a good handmade flintlock rifle can hit a target 300 metres away while still being lethal. I love these guns.
Also the person who got hit twice with a musket ball is named James P. Kegerreis
And a guy got a bullet directly in the middle of his forehead and his name was James Miller. Spoilers, he lived.

Thanks for clarifying a damp environment… haha I needed that

Wheel locks don't get enough love in the steampunk aesthetic. Imo, though

Parts failing on wheel locks were fairly common though which was a con. But was also possible to use from horseback witch the match lock couldn't really be used well from. Would love to try a wheel lock and match lock build one of these days.

The spear to this day is THE best weapon for that exact reason.
Cost effectiveness, nothing beats a pointy stick. Except maybe a blunt stick.
This is why spears are by far the most common weapon in armies before firearms

A wheellock is technically also "better" in the sense that it takes a shorter time from you pull the trigger until the gun fires than a flintlock. (although the difference is very small, and would probably only matter in a target shooting enviroment).

The drawback to this, is that the spring inside the wheellock has to be wound up between each shot, which takes more time than pulling back the hammer on a flintlock.

Hey. Firearm enthusiast here, and while I love the wheel-lock, it's probably my favourite firelock, it's not that accurate to say the flintlock is better solely on grounds of cost. The wheel-lock, while leaps and bounds ahead of the slow-match matchlock, had a head of drawbacks.

You needed a spanner to wind the mechanism, so if you lost or broke your spanner the gun is useless.

The mechanism was so complicated that it was mainly trained clock makers who could maintain them as they were the only ones with the skill to do so.

2 things I know about wheel locks: the mechanism took (takes, there are modern reproductions) a bit of time to actually fire, so you need to keep the barrel pointed at the target for noticably longer than you would for a modern firearm.

The second is that only very wealthy people could afford a wheel lock because of the time spent making it and the overall quality of the weapon. It actually became popular among noblemen who basically were a hybrid between lance and armor heavy cavalry and Napoleonic/American Civil War missile cavalry.

Can you do a video on the history of Beretta?

And I'd like to see a company put out a wheel lock series sometime, I think it would be fun

If you want to talk about wild weapons you should bring up the Vespa 150 Tap, the most insane French thing i have ever seen.

Wheellocks hit the same quandry as most engineering projects. More moving parts allows you to improve performance, but it also reduces reliability and increases cost.

in times of war, logistics is one of the biggest factor. The more cost effective weapons you can equip to as many people, the more successful you will be in your campaigns

I love the emphasis on "efficent" while loving the wheel variant. 🤣

Same reason why, even though we had riffles and actually rapid fire guns during the revolutionary War, they were so damned expensive that they weren't viable for an army.

I'm going to have to weigh in on this and say that the flintlock is more efficient than the wheel lock for the simple fact that you didn't have to have a spanner for a flintlock to cock the gun.

There is a reason why the Flintlock took off and the wheel lock really didn't

I also read a long time ago that the mechanism in a wheel lock was so complex that they were actually being made by clock makers so that also made them more expensive.

My Brother, a Metallurgy, machinist kinda guy. Built a Wheelock, thing was amazing.

There's so much cool inventions that just didn't make it, because they were inefficient.

My favorite is the Girandoni Air Rifle, Italian invention and used for a while (in the late 18th century) in the Austrian Army.

Maybe you could talk about them :D

This is why I love watching your videos, because not only am I learning something new…it’s flippen cool as hell. Like I’ve never heard of an wheellock gun before until now. Idk, I just get so pumped after watching your clips sometimes. “Hell yea dude, you explained the shit out of it. I can’t wait to use this information in the future with all of my history nerdy friends.” Lmao 🤣

“Say, have you ever heard of the wheellock gun? No? Well you’re in luck. I just so happen to be an expert on this matter.”

So a theoretical fantasy gunslinger in a flintlock age who's meant to be specialist in his field would likely use Wheelock guns while common soldiers would use flintlock
