Could Canada Join the EU?

As tensions rise between Canada and the US, new PM Mark Carney has made overtures to Europe in a bid to strengthen ties and while it's unlikely to join the bloc any time soon, it certainly isn't impossible. So let's dive into how and why it could happen.

Irishman here, I personally would welcome Canadians with open arms to full EU membership but perhaps the way in is through EEA membership and joining the Schengen area. It would appear to be somewhat easier to achieve this and if at a later date Canada wanted to become a full member then it would be a simplified process as many conditions/standards would have already been met. I do also note that Morocco tried to join in 1987 but was turned down with one of the principle reasons being that they weren't in 'Europe'...

Well, as pointed out, domestic EU flights already take off within sight of Canadian soil, and Canada shares a land border with Greenland, whose citizens are EU citizens. It's a small step, viewed that way ;-)

As a Canadian it’s funny to see channels discussing us joining the US or Europe when neither will happen.

Cyprus is in the Middle East and is an EU member. It's closer to Syria and Lebanon than to any other EU member state. I dont see any reason why Canada couldn't join the EU
