Travel has been something that humans have grown into more than just moving around. Because at one point in time the "easiest way" to get around was by foot or on a horse. Then it became about wagons and buggies, cars, planes, and so on. One mode of transportation though that is incredibly vital all over the world is that of ships. Because most times, ships are the vessels by which both cargo and people get around. But that just makes it all the more curious when they vanish or are abandoned. So from the Costa Concordia to the SS Ourang Medan, and more, allow us to show you the 20 most mysterious abandoned ships in the world!

Correction right off the bat.... Costa Concordia wasn't in waters too shallow...she was in waters too close to the rocks offshore, (performing a sail by the island) and could not move quickly enough away given her speed, current, wind, and other factors, all of which meant that she scraped a huge rock formation, tore open a huge gash and eventually sank. She continued out and away after the collision into deeper waters, however, luckily, she drifted back closer to the shallow waters before she went down, and so ended up only partially submerged. If she had gone down in the deeper waters, they would never have been able to remove her.

The captain of the Costa Concordia left the ship while the passengers were still on board. Even I know the Captain is ALWAYS the last survivor to leave the ship. That’s why so many captains went down with their ships, because there were still survivors aboard up to that point.

That ship on the rock has to be fake, or a movie set. That is an 18th century sailing ship, yet it's masts and riggings are still intact hundreds of years later?

My mother emigrated to the US in 1959 on the SS America, she was in 2nd class and danced to the big band orchestra every night. Not the typical immigrant to America tale.😂

Between Astoria and Seaside on the Oregon coast is the wreck of the Peter Airedale, an ironclad sailing ship. Most of the time you can only see the bow sticking out of the sand, but sometimes weather conditions expose more of the ship from below the sand. it's not far from the ruins of Ft. Stevens, a coastal artillery base that was decommissioned after WWII. It's famous because it was the only place in the Continental US that exchanged fire with enemy forces during the war.

I think that sailing ship on the rock is extremely suspicious. How could the rigging be intact after the amount of time it's taken to grow all that greenery?

About the "Ourang Medan": It is just a story. The exact date and location is not stated. Their is no shipwreck that matches the story and the name itself is not to be found in any ship registry.

Can you imagine the wildlife in the forest ship above and below?

After watching so many of these videos I have come to the conclusion that the biggest problem isn't mother nature or even operator error.. its after all these years of maritime experience someone needs to create an unbreakable tow rope or chain.

The USS Phenakite was also in service in the New York area during the early 80's and oddly enough appeared in a Madonna music video!

What about the S.S. Minnow? What happened to Gillian? Did he ever get with Ginger or Marianne? 😅

The sailing ship on the rock, got thrown up there from high waves during a hurricane or really bad storm. That's my story and I'm sticking to it!
