The Nasty Origins of Ketchup

Показать описание
Did you know that ketchup used to be made out of fish guts? That's right. This famous condiment, known for its vinegary, sweet tomato taste, used to be nothing like it is today. In fact, the tomato part is a relatively recent addition. So how did ketchup go from being made out of fish to the sauce we know and love today? And how does it involve... Sailors, China, vinegar? And cookbooks?

Take a guess in the comments, and by the end of the video, we'll have your answer. You're probably wondering why a condiment with fish would be called ketchup? I mean, where are the tomatoes?

I'd really like to know how far back we're going with the connection to chinese cooking because if I remember correctly the romans had a similar flavouring sauce that was fermented fish discard and oil and a few other things I forget. that said it's entirely likely that both cultures came up with a similar things completely independently of eachother where in this case one was somewhat forgotten and the other sparked a culinary revolution.

A lot of Asian condiment sauces are fermented. I wonder how fermented ketchup would taste.

Just found your channel. I’d like to know where custard pie came from. Chinese dim sum restaurants have egg tarts (蛋撻) as a staple and I wonder if the pie is a super-sized version. I searched for videos but only got pie recipes. 🥧

Nasty? Worcestershire sauce is still made from fermented fish and Westerners eat that up.
