Considering this will be middle of the night scenario in most cases, I have a plan with my family where the kids and wife are on a completely different floor than I am. They’re locked up in a room and hidden. Wife is calling 911 and taking care of keeping the kids quiet. She is also armed with a 12 ga and 9mm. The 9 mil in hand and the shotgun within reach of it’s needed. She’s taught to shoot anything at all that comes through that door and to not stop pulling the trigger until she hears “click”..obviously we have communicated a secret word so she doesn’t kill me by mistake lol and obviously she will know if it’s the police.
If at all possible, daddy needs to go play alone and defend the castle and occupants.

I think a lot of people are missing the point. Obviously carrying an infant in a potential firefight isn't the optimal situation to be in, but there might be a case where this is non-optional. If you hear a bump in the night and the structure you live in is perfectly linear so that you can place the baby in the farthest room and clear the house with absolutely zero chance that someone could get past you to the baby on a timing or different route, then maybe it makes sense to leave them in a room. Provided you also plan to stay the night like normal in the house after it's been "cleared."

But what if it's not a perfect situation? It very likely isn't. By clearing the structure solo, there is inevitably going to be opportunity for someone to reach that room while you're preoccupied clearing something else. What if you need to leave? What if you're just clearing to the door so you can get out? If this were a real situation, unfortunately you don't get to set the context and you might not have many options. So would you rather have practiced it, or would you rather have not?
